I recently purchased a used Sony TRV480 camcorder from Ebay. It looks to be in excellent condition and was advertised as low use. I have a collection of 8mm camcorder tapes that I want to transfer into digital format which this camcorder will do.
My question is should I have the heads cleaned in order to ensure the best quality transfer? There isn't any obvious noise in the picture when I have transferred some tape thus far.

Run a cleaning tape for a few seconds every 30-50 tapes or so. More often if the tapes are old.
DV camcorders have lots of error correction and most will warn if errors get too great. You will see the first signs of dirty heads as mild pixelation.
I usually run a cleaning tape for a few seconds before a major shoot.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
