Just an fyi for others who may be interested. I finally bought my new tablet I've been waiting to get.

I bought the 16gb Google Nexus 7.

It's a 1.5ghz quad core tablet.

I had to download the bsplayer free edition to play this test file but it played it perfectly:

My previous no name cheapo tablet would have chocked and refused to play this file. But the nexus 7 fired it up right away and played it perfectly.

This is only the first hi10 file I have tested so far so there may still be some in my collection that may have to be reencoded. But I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Hopefully this will be useful to someone in the future. If you can get a tablet with equivalent specs as the nexus 7 (the one currently available in stores as of March 2014) you can play hi10 h264 video files without the need to reencode them to 8 bit files.

This will save me lots of time and headaches in the future.

The only weird thing was the superhd player isn't preinstalled on the nexus 7. It was installed on my no name tablet, android 4.1 I think it is.

Oh and the best thing is it came with android 4.3 but I was able to upgrade to 4.4.2 right away straight from the tablet itself. No problems at all.

I definitely like it a lot so far and the screen is very vivid. And the speakers are really good too. My no name tablets speakers were so weak I always used headphones with it.

And I finally have a tablet with bluetooth so I can use my cordless bluetooth headphones with it.

Sorry I'd rather not.

If its a dual core tablet I will guess it can't handle hi 10. Just search the net for hi10 h264 or encode a sample from a hd file you have on your computer. Just use ripbot264 or megui and you are all set.

It might not help but you could try bsplayer or mxplayer. Both have hardware encoder modes that are supposed to play hi 10 files. But I didn't have success with them on my old tablet. That's why I got the nexus 7.

I used MoBo player. It's free and lets you choose between H/W or S/W decoder. I let it use H/W decoder and it played it at what looked like 15 fps when it should have been 24 fps.

Oh well at least this 1 GHz dual-core can play full 1080p @ 24 fps h.264, 4.1 or lower.....

That's too bad.

As I mentioned that's why I upgraded. I didn't want to convert anymore.

It turns out bsplayer is only playing in software mode not hardware mode. But it's doing it at what appears to be close to the original frame rate so there is no noticeable slowdowns or dropouts. So Im definitely happy with the two test files I've used so far.

you guys really should update your mkvtools and use the new version to remux without header stripping. and does bsplayer or mxplayer handle dts audio on the tablet ok?

No need to update mkvtools since it's for osx,also this is for testing on android tablets so head stripping isn't an issue,head stripping is a problem for blu-ray players.To plays video with dts audio you need to download the codec for it.

header stripping causes problems with any software that doesn't acknowledge it. it's a part of the mkv spec that wasn't well received and died a timely death.

how about dts in mx player on android?

The bsplayer free edition played it perfectly in software mode.

Mx player only played the audio no video.

The stock player didn't play the video, just the audio.

I don't have a dedicated x265 player for android so I don't know if there is hardware support for it yet. If its software only right now you'll have to have a fast tablet to decode it in software mode from the looks of things right now.

Well I don't know if it was a 100% full framerate. It might have been lower. But it was not perceivable to me if it was lower than the original rate. I don't know if bsplayer has a frame rate display while a video is playing.

If someone knows for sure I could do that and test it again while that file is playing.

I tried it on Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, 1.4 GHz quad-core processor and it played that HVEC, that was surprise, average 19fps (18fps or so streaming over LAN) , so almost there ...

I don't know if bsplayer has a frame rate display while a video is playing.

press that "i" at the bottom,..., that bsplayer for Android seems to be much better than MXplayer, as for playing Hi10, HVEC or DTS even ...

that bsplayer plays DTS also

the hvec file plays at 23.87fps here on the nexus 7 2013 or over wifi. i couldn't find anything but bsplayer to play the video either, not even the latest vlc beta.

Thanks. Yep I got 23.8 to 23.9 like aedipuss. Strange that it says the frame rate is 24 even but it ranges from 23.x to 23.9. But like I said there wasn't any issues from a visual standpoint, even if its not a 100% perfect, which I guess it is.

Thanks for trying it out guys. From the responses, it looks like you need at least a 1.5 ghz quad-core to play a 720p hevc file. I'll have to keep that in mind when I want to upgrade.

I'd wait for the next model change by samsung or google. Than you should be able to get this current generation of quad cores at a reduced rate.

I didn't want to wait anymore to upgrade my tablet experience.

It'll be a while before I upgrade anyway. I really like my little 7 inch Asus MemoPad. I got it on sale for $80 USD last year, can't go wrong and it's more than proven it's worth.

Just thought I'd mention I can finally use the vudu app! All my ultraviolet movies are now available on my tablet. My speed is great and no stuttering.

I just watched part of star trek into darkness and it looks and sounds great.

I'm liking this even more now.

For some reason usb otg is not enabled on the nexus 7. I have a otg cable but it won't work by itself.

After digging around I found a 4.00usd app called nexus media importer. It will read usb otg devices without needing to root the unit.

Only trouble is at the moment I think it only does file transfers. I don't know how to use it like a regular old sd card on my old tablet. I can't seem to select a file and launch it with an app. I mean like looking at a folder of video files and loading it into a video app without saving it to the tablet first.

This is nearly great if I can figure out how to read from it without copying.


It will still be cool as I can copy to the device without having to boot up a computer. I just have to connect the harddrive and go. But it seems like it's only powered usb drives. I have a 500gb seagate drive that just kept doing nothing while a 2tb powered western digital drive was read right away.

If I can figure out how to watch or listen to files off of a usb drive with this program without copying them to the tablet first this will solve my lack of a sd card issue.

I do recommend this program so far even with its apparent limitation. And 4.00 isn't bad either.

If I can figure out how to essentially "stream" from a usb (ie play without copying to the tablet first) I'll report back.

EDIT - YOU HAVE TO GO TO VIDEOS AND THEN YOU CAN "STREAM" FROM THE USB DRIVE!!!

Yep click videos and then you get your file list - then select the file you want and it will let you play it with any of your video apps.

Edit - I didn't realize that in the folders tab section you can still launch the video file without copying it.

Even better so you can browser your folders unlike the awful file list view of the "videos" tab. Just select "folders' and then select the file you want and in the right panel you can press it to launch your video app.

Why not to use wi-fi for streaming? Es File Explorer with Bsplayer for example could be only apps you might need for that. With those small mobile devices it is kind of clumsy to be wired to large storage of some sort.

Actually I use headphones while watching anyway so I already have a cable, no biggie.

I do have Bluetooth ones but they were uncomfortable after awhile.

Besides I don't have to do any networking this way. Just having the two units on will be good.

I don't think I would buy a tablet without a micro SD slot. 32 GB card holds a lot of videos, photos and music.

What I would really like to do with my little tablet, is convert it into an external monitor/controller for my DSLR. Unfortunately every app I tried so far has failed.....

I thought I'd mention I finally have a smart device with a auto focus camera. I can now use those barcode scanning apps.

I have the my movies app. I had to manually add them. Now I can scan the barcodes.

I thought I'd update this thread. I bought some no name Bluetooth over the ear headphones.

I really like them. They are Bluetooth 3.0 but the nexus is 4.0. I don't think I'll lose out on any 4.0 features since I'll only be using it for listening to movies/TV shows, not making calls.

I'll also be streaming vids from apps or my ouya via xbmc or my PC via playon.

Point is I'm finally 100% cordless now.

I was using wired ear buds before.

I'm curious, how much does Bluetooth tax the battery?

I'll be at home with these so charging won't be a problem.

I've love my nexus!!!!

I have some behind the ear Bluetooth headphones but watching a video longer than ten minutes is painful if your laying down. It has the hard plastic band which bites into your neck.
