1. does mp4 support 10-bit.
2. if yes, how do i convert a 10-bit mkv into a 10-bit mp4? im currently using format factory with avisynth.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

there is not such thing as mkv video, mkv is a container that holds video, audio, subs, chapters, etc. try mkvextractgui2 to get the video out of the container.

maybe when you get back to a computer because if i leave "convert to" blank and the go to the presets there is not a passthru option
and if i choose convert to mp4 then i have even fewer options -
Even if you can mux 10bit h.264 into an MP4 container -- will anything other than a computer play it? What would be the point?

im just trying to figure out how to get my 10-bit animes into mp4 period. the issue is that the 10-bit ones are troublesome
-
yeah also, i dont have that _Passthrough preset at all. did you create all of those passthrough options?
-
i just copied what you had showed. is there any way to integrate avisynth into this process so that I can hardcode my ass subtitles? i know its a little off the topic of this forum but that was my original goal (convert to mp4 with hardcoded subtitles so that I can play them on appletv)
-
I should be clear i've been doing exactly that using avisynth and format factory. this method skips the conversion part though so i'm not sure how to get the subtitles in without re-converting it.

Yes, _Passthrough was created simply by entering it in the category box. It is not part of the preset package that comes with winff. The name starts with an underscore so it will show up near the top of the category dropdown.
I don't know or use ffmpeg commands for adding subtitles. Someone else may have the answer to that.
Some media players will automatically recognize subtitles if they have the the same filename as the video file. But that again, is not something I use.
Hardcoded subtitles requires a conversion. Period. Avisynth will also necessitate a conversion. -
i actually got it figured out! your passthrough suggestion was brilliant though!
i used winff to passthrough the h264 video and aac audio into an mp4 container which you and others were right would not play in itunes / appletv so i used avisynth and format factory to convert as i normally would but using the new mp4 in the .avs file.
thanks for the great suggestion!
PS. this didnt allow me to get 10bit video into itunes but it worked with VLC and Media Player Classic
