Hey All:
I started using MakeMKV to rip the titles off the various HDdvd's I have. The quality is great, but no matter what conversion program I use to re size the MKV to a the right size, I get motion that is not smooth. Is there a setting that I'm missing when I do the encoding?
Any help would be appreciated, TIA deanh42

re size the MKV to a the right size
when I do the encoding?
And how do you play it? -
Is it by any chance a 1920x1080 interlaced program with 3:2 pulldown that you're reencoding to 1280x720 progressive? Please let us know more about your source and settings.

HD-DVD didn't support 24p - so films were "telecined" or had 3:2 pulldown to output the required 29.97 frame rate (59.94 field/s) . One of the reasons contributing to why BD "won"
You cannot "strip" a flag (there is no soft pulldown), it has to be re-encoded if you want native "24p", or your playback chain has to IVTC on the fly -
There is one interesting change in the rip from MakeMKV.
Here is the MediaInfo log from one of the EVO files on my only HD DVD disc (Tremors)
Video
Format : VC-1
Format profile : AP@L3
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive
Scan order : Bottom Field First
And here is the log from the ripped MKV file from MakeMKV:
Video
ID : 1
Format : VC-1
Format profile : AP@L3
Codec ID : WVC1
Codec ID/Hint : Microsoft
Duration : 1h 35mn
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Resolution : 24 bits
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive
Scan order : Top Field First
I wonder why the scan order went from Bottom Field first to Top Field first? -

you were told what is going on here, you have to ivtc video and make sure encoder is reading correct input before ivtc is applied , you did not mentioned what software you use, if you can fix all of that in whatever you use
if your video is true interlace (not shot on film) then you have to make sure that field order is read correctly (based on Kerry56 input) and de-interlace it to doble frame rate and only then resize it - that is not perhaps your case, or just use AnyDVDHD + good encoder
or just use different tools, like AnyDvDHD + Encoder that can IVTC and resize
Blu-Ray is different beast, video is already 23.976p (as it was shot on film) no ivtc is needed
