Where is *the* place to get a straight answer in a question on tv interference?
I've tried toms hardware and it is so poorly laid out that there's no way to get an email notification of an answer. Other sites like tv.com are mostly about programing or send you to pay for advice places.
My question for any interested here is that I've gotten diagonal straight line interference running from top right to bottom left screen. The set is old: a trinitron I've had for 20 years. It is used these days for dvd playback.
One suggestion related to video help is any relation of this problem to electrical line interference that could be fixed by a line conditioner(?)
Or is the set just old and developing old age problems?

Does the interference occur while on antenna or composite input? If both then it might be RF interference, try plugging in the TV to it's own outlet and turn off any electronics nearby. You can get a RF filter at Radio Shack, if that doesn't fix it then the TV is the problem.

Ok, thanks. Better than a $100 line conditioner.
I've seen the interference on the screen whenever the dvd player is engaged. But all I have is bug fight without that. I don't watch tv and haven't for many years. and I've tried changing outlets with a long extension chord. I thought I had nailed it when switching to S-video and got a nice long one that would reach where the tv is. Still interference. I see the interference whne selecting Video rather than tv.
I know you will ask about the dvd player. I just don't know how that could be the source. But I looked up an old article about putting lead foil on dvd player components to increase the shielding.
The RS Radio RF filter isn't the same as an old still RF modulator for monitors? I hope not.
If you have a part number that would help. -
I did some further tests on these things I normally never ever look at. DVD player off but connected to S-Video to the television.
The Sony has Video One and Video Two channels for players. All the interference
comes through on Video One.
Video Two shows no interference so that lets out the TV as the source of trouble.
But I cannot see from a physical switch or button on the remote how to force the signal to Video Two. Rear connections on the TV have S-Video and Composite plus audio simialr to the rear of the Sony dvd player.
Then there's the Trinitron remote called a uiversal commander. I don't normally use any of this.
Can Video Two be selected some way for comparison of signal? I do not know how to access it to test. In daytime I can look in my manual stack and see if there's the Sony and if there's anything about VTR channel switching. The remote has one button-- actually two which appear to control TV/Video. The one button to do this on the tv has three selections: push for Video One again for Two then three is television. That must correspond to one or other on the remote. -
1:
Until you get another device capable of supplying signal to the tv on the offending channel input which has interference you cannot rule out the tv as being at fault.
2:
As for selecting outputs from player you should have an option either on the remote or need to enter the main players menu to set output connection.
Ive seen those triinitron units with defective inputs before and just don't bother using that input and junk them when done. -
I'm not using the audio at all on the tv.
Years back I even got a service manual to straighten out the picture which is skewed horizonatally. I did not know about the advice to always get your big tv off the sales floor: the one the technicians have tuned. Never got the picture straight. That $25.00 tech manual and the book from the tv box are hiding from me-- not in with the rest of my manuals. I wouldn't have thrown it out but after 10 years in one place there's a lot of places to look for things. I'm still at it. My best guess was to look near 'the job' which was that skew problem near the shelves at the tv stand. Still no tv manual.
I have no rabbit ears or cable connection. Like I said, I've been clean of tv for a long time. I might just have to live with this.
Can a DVD remote select which Video channel as opposed to broadcast be sent to? That's what I can't understand. The book says to:
"Switch the input selecter on your tv so that the signal from the player appears on the screen."
I've done that and it's on Video One. This happens for either Composite or S-video. It begs the question: what is Video Two used for?
Older tv tuners had adjustments for channel 'drift'. I've seen nothing like that on here but that might have been channel drift from the broadcast source-- a moot point with
cable tv being most common. -
The Video Two inputs may be located on the front of the television behind a flip-down panel. They may also be located on the side of the television near the front. Video Two might only provide composite connections, not s-video.

!
I completely overlooked the pull down tab on the front panel never having used it. And yes it is composite. I will use my old composite cable and see if Video Two fires up at all. I don't want to work the S-Video which hooked up too much since playing with these old connections made the plugs hard to insert and I bent a pin (which I straightened.) -
I cannot see any interference using this front jack but will test view for a while.
Plugs on the front are a distraction and take away from concentration.
But I thank you for the advice. This may be the cure. Will report back. -
Many years ago, when confronted with this problem on my father's set, I adapted a cable using right-angle f-connectors and black heatshrink tubing from Radio Shack to create a cable end that almost disappeared against the black television base.
On the other hand, a black dress sock with the toe cut out, used as a sleeve, might do just as much good. -
Yes I thought of right angle plugs. And what I have to make the length needed is a kluge of various pig tails and gender change connectors. The picture seems better so far but I have to have more than a black and white sample.
And I'm totally spoiled by de-interlaced avi files on the CRT monitor. It beats tv.
The Sony sits on a good size piece of green billiard felt. I was able to
simply wrap the cables around the side of the set and flip up the cloth on the front edge to hide the stuff.
I got the billiard felt one time by just asking for any cut offs at a pool table supply place. At that time it was going to be used for audio speaker mods. -
Still watching the same b/w series of dvd's of an old television show. The problem has not returned.
This topic shoukd be able to be marked solved if I knew how to do it. I've done that elsewhere when I see the options.
And one again thanks for taking the time on something only slightly on topic. -
Nope, no "Mark solved" an option at thread tools. It should be considered as an add to videohelp.
