I had an extra refurb computer sitting around that I wasn't doing much with, so I did a Windows 10 upgrade on it to see how things went, and began actually using it for stuff.

Today I took a 3 hour .mp4 video and used it and AVStoDVD to author a DVD.

Checked the .iso out using VLC Media Player, playing it like a virtual DVD.

The audio and video were out of sync. Badly out of sync. I did it twice. Same story.

Took the .mp4 to my usual computer, did EVERYTHING exactly the same. Results? The new .iso played thru VLC perfectly. No sync problems at all.

My usual computer has an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, 3.16ghz, 4 gigs of ram.

The Windows 10 computer has an Intel Core 2 duo E8400, 3.00ghz, also 4 gigs of ram.

How can two nearly identical computers handle things so differently?

All I can figure is Windows 10 doesn't like video editing?

and of course..you installed all the same software version from the same downloads ?
and have all the same codecs installed ?,
and made sure everything was setup identical
    before running this test
and did Not use the GPU of either machine

if all of this is true, i have no idea why win 10 would be different

me i'm still running win 8.1 and would prefer to be running win 7
i'm not ready to jump on the 'ten' band wagon
but i am NOT totally happy with 8.1

  3. Running Windows 10 here. Used AVStoDVD today in fact on two different mp4s. No problems whatsoever.

many thanks for this thread about Win10 compatibility. I still don't have upgraded Win7, hence I cannot be of much help.

BTW I would address first the investigation to the MS directshow filters.

Could you post the out-of-sync project log file?

i had problems too with audio sync after upgrading to win10.
I had to reset the prefered directshow codecs to lav filters.
They were all back to ''microsoft''.

    Thanks imhh1 for the feedback.

What have you used to revert the codecs to LAV Filters? The AVStoDVD internal Preferred DirectShow Codecs Setup or Win7DSFilterTweaker?

I don't know how to answer the first question, Mr. C, because I uninstalled AVStoDVD and Imgburn. I'm about to reinstall them.

If there IS a change ("lav filters"?) that I can do that'll fix this, would someone tell me how to do it? ("Talk to me like I'm five years old")

The AVStoDVD internal Preferred DirectShow Codecs Setup.

I think I found my way to the right panel, but I'm not sure what to set.

My other computer, the Windows 7 machine that's handling things fine, has different settings on the Preferred DirectShow Codecs Setup panel. Should I just make sure the Windows 10 computer has the same settings as the Windows 7 machine, and see how that goes?

EVERYTHING on the W10 machine reads "Microsoft", so I know something's different.

The W7 machine has "Enhanced Video Rendering" for the first four settings, the "Microsoft" button is plainly pressed for the next six settings, and the final one (AC3) reads "No Preferred Filter set".

Thing is, the W10 machine also says that on the final one.

What would be the ideal settings on each of the 11 settings, for both Windows 10 and 7?

    No go.

I tried to reset the codecs to LAV Filters, but the software kept telling me those hadn't been updated.

  11. You can use also Win7DSFilterTweaker to select the preferred filters.

And do not forget to post here the project log file if you still get out-of-sync (or troubles whatsoever).

Let me slip a comment in here-
While trying to make the DVD, I was told by the software that aften.exe had "stopped working", and that it was having problems with the audio, and would have to use an alternate method of handling that.

    We know what resulted.

Here's the log from the latest attempt at creating an .iso from just this afternoon.

I've tried creating the disc using the same release of AVStoDVD on a different computer running Windows 7. The .iso turned out fine. I can still create this disc, but I really want to be able to do these burns on the Windows 10 machine too.

I almost wish I'd never tried Windows 10....

have you tried to select LAV Filters with Win7DSFilterTweaker? Any success in changing the preferred filter?

    Moreover I suggest you to:
    - uninstall ffdshow (it is redudant if you have LAV Filters)
    - upgrade to AVStoDVD 2.8.2
    - upgrade to AviSynth 2.6.0 (which comes with AVStoDVD 2.8.2)

Then run again the project and post here the log file if you get issues again.

I'll try the Tweaker, if I can figure out how to use it.

I actually did have the current AVStoDVD on the computer, and that's what started all of this. I noted the other computer had the earlier version and worked fine, so I uninstalled the current one from the Windows 10 computer, and put 2.8.0 in.

    It made no difference.

What I'll try now is uninstalling 2.8.0 and putting back in the current version (I asssume that's 2.8.2?)

As mentioned, when I tried to use the onboard method of switching to LAV Fliters, the computer told me the codecs weren't updated.

I do wonder how to uninstall ffdshow. Will that go away when I uninstall 2.8.0, or is there something else I need to do?

    EDIT:

    I've uninstalled Avisynth 2.5 and AVStoDVD 2.8.0.

Can't see how to uninstall ffdshow. A search on the computer shows it's on board, but I don't know where.

Doing a search, it's showing as an app, but the location isn't provided. It's not showing up in the list of programs that can be deleted.

    EDIT:

Located where the ffdshow decoders (audio and video) are located, but it seems they're both leading back to a file in the K-Lite Codec Pack, a couple folders deep, and the file name is "ffdshow.ax". Should I just delete that file?

Yes, but you're testing it out (Win 10, that is) the right way: on a spare, non-critical, non-production rig. That's exactly how I am -- very belatedly -- finally going about testing Win 8.1. So far, no matter how much time or effort I've put into trying to "Seven-ize" its UI, I think the thing is still basically a very misguided turkey ! The only thing favorable I could say is that the compatibility with my existing roster of apps seems to be better than what I expected. This is something I do NOT expect to see from 10. But there are a number of other reasons why I believe 10 will be a deal-breaker. Still, I may go on to test it in much the same way, so I won't be criticizing something I have not test driven myself.

Such testing is much better handled with the live CDs or DVDs of various Linux distros. You don't even need to commit as far as an install, to gain a pretty fair idea of what you would be signing up for.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

Have you tried to uninstall the K-Lite Codec Pack? It should take care to remove all the stuff it installed, including the registry references.

A suggestion of mine: get rid of every codecs packs. LAV Filters should cover 99.9% of decoding filters need.

    Ahhh...

I checked. K-Lite does appear as a program that can be uninstalled.

I can try that, but AVStoDVD kept telling me that the attempt to switch to LAV Filters was failing because the codecs hadn't been updated/upgraded (I forget how it was phrased).

How do I make sure the LAV Filters are actually on board, and that they're up to date?

The last thing I need to do is further cripple this computer.

Also, you say LAV will handle 99.9% of my A/V needs...

What about the remaining .1%? What will I be facing there?

(Please understand, I'm not arguing. I really appreciate your help. We just don't want things to go from bad to worse. )

Have you tried with Win7DSFilterTweaker? It is s powerful and dedicated tool to select the directshow filters.

Will they be part of the new AVStoDVD installation?

    Bye

Following your suggestions, I was able to (apparently) get the LAV Filters in place, tho' I'm still not sure I operated the Win7DSFilterTweaker correctly.

I tried making an .iso of my video again, and this time the audio was ALMOST in sync. I could see a slight difference between the playback of that .iso and the one made on my Windows 7 computer (which came out perfect).

Let me say the sync problem is so minor I can't even tell if the audio is a split second too early, or too late, and it does stay that way for the whole video, not getting any worse towards the end.

It's just that I'm just a purist, and wish the audio and video were PERFECT, like they still are on my Windows 7 machine.

I do appreciate your help. Thank you very much.

I also hope, however, that you'll work on AVStoDVD with Windows 10 in mind, and that the next version of AVStoDVD once again works perfectly, even on Windows 10.

Sorry for the late reply. Haven't been here in several days. Believe this is the log for the "almost perfect" .iso file -

  29. The log file is showing that the directshow filters configuration is correct now. The output assest files are OK too in terms of duration.

Would you like to do another try? Before adding the mp4 title, go to 'Preferences' -> 'AviSynth' and select 'FFMpegSource' instead of 'A2DSource' for Video and Audio source filters.

With those settings, we should get rid of every attempt of Win10 to jump in in the decoding process.

I converted three long videos to DVD on Windows 10 last night and had no problems during the encode and all three came out perfect.
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly
