I'm trying to record my old LPs to my computer using a phono box into the line in. Am using Windows 7 and Sound Forge 4.0 (yeah old but it works).

The odd thing that's happening is this - when I turn down the volume on my speakers (so that I can record at a nice high line-in level without shaking my windows), the volume on the recording level ALSO drops. This is very strange, no ?

The computer is not 'listening' to the mic....

Use headphones to monitor the "Line In", instead of speakers.

Hmm...now the computer isn't 'hearing'' the music, even though it's playing on my headphones (which are connected to the sound card line out).....so I guess it was 'listening' to the microphone previously. How do I fix this ?

Usually in the sound cards software mixer, there is a separate level for recording.
    Have you checked this?
