What kind of player? Settop or software?

Playing as DVD-Video format or as some other more generic multimedia data file (such as your MP4)?

"Without any loss of quality" isn't very likely.

    More info please...

Nothing in your file is valid for DVD, so you'll have to convert everything. You will lose quality for sure. This is more work than I would ever do, so somebody else is going to have to help you with that.

There's no standard for 3D on DVD so 3D DVD players don't exist.

If you did find a DVD player that could play your MP4 file, the odds of it playing a file with a resolution above 720x560 (you have 1920x800) are extremely low.

You might be able to play the file on a 3D BluRay player if you burn it to a DVD disc without conversion, but at no point in your thread have you talked about 3D BluRay player.

you really need a 3d hdtv and 3d capable blu-ray player to do 3d in a watchable/enjoyable format. the old SD tv red/blue glasses really don't work well.

Let's assume for argument's sake that you already have a 3DTV...

    To view a Full-Quality 3D movie AUTOMATICALLY, you would need 3D Blu-rays & a 3D Blu-ray player. That's ALL. The only way.**

If you can give a little on the Full-Quality or the Automatic engagement to 3D, you have a whole lot more options:
    • 3DBD converted to SbS/TaB media file (could be MP4, MKV, AVI, etc). The file is stored either on external HDD or Flashdrive/USBstick and played via the TV itself or general media player or disc player (Blu-ray or DVD) that supports those external media. You'd need to manually engage and adjust the 3D to select the layout format appropriate for how the file was encoded.
    • That kind of file or similar file from different source, including streaming websites that support 3D such as YT & Vimeo, played via HTPC using either StereoscopicPlayer/3DVisionPlayer (giving you lots of output layout options) or via VLC/MPCHD, etc (giving you only the layout option it was encoded as). Similar manual adjustment is required.
    • Reception of OTA/Dish/Sat/Cable channels that transmit in stereoscopic via a settop box, with similar manual adjustment.
You could also ALWAYS use any of those files converted from their native layout format into the lowest common denominator (aka ANAGLYPH - Red & Cyan, etc) and watch as 3D with the appropriate glasses, EVEN ON A 2DTV, but as was mentioned, you will be losing a lot of the quality and extra experience when you do. Plus, it makes your eyes tired MUCH more quickly than modern, full-color, improved 3D methods (Active LC shutterglasses or Passive Polarized lenses).

    Scott

**This has changed slightly, depending upon what you consider FullHD3D and where your source is from...

the side by side video is the same as any other mp4. it just has 2 copies of the video in each frame. you can convert it to any format you want. it's the tv that converts it to 3d. you can push the 3d button while watching anything. so your boilsoft thing or any other converter will do the job.

And you MAY not even need to reencode. Might be just a matter of demuxing the mp4 into its constituent streams and then remuxing into avi.

    I just converted a 3D from a MP4 to VOB with convertxtodvd link-http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
It will convert it and burn it to a DVD and you will lose some quality. On my DVD they come out great. I just converted a MP4 3D and burned it. Will give it to my brother because I do not have a 3 D TV. So I wont know yet if it works. I can say when I play the movie it has a split screen.
Untill I see if my brother can play it on his 3D TV.

If you DON'T have a 3DTV, it will always stay just a silly split-screen video in 2D. If you wanted to watch it "in 3D" on your 2D TV set, you would have to first re-encode it as an Anaglyph, as mentioned before.

If your brother has a 3DTV, (and assuming you properly re-encoded & authored & played the DVD), he should be able to play the DVD, manually switch his TV into 3D mode - using SbS as the 3D input source choice - and should see it fine in 3D.

@lalmeada, it is NOT the conversion to filetypes/codecs that I was referring to, but rather the 3D-layout types. By and large, containers & codecs are ignorant of 3D-layout (there are exceptions).

    But,
Since you already converted to the appropriate VOB for DVD use, and you intend to display on your brother's 3DTV via DVD settop player, you are done. No need to give me some huge rundown of available types, etc.: I could care less about that.

My TV won't go into 3D mode unless the resolution is 720p or greater. I'd imagine most TVs would be the same. Therefore to play SBS 3D video converted to DVD format, I'd imagine the DVD player would have to be capable of upscaling. Or you'd need to use a Bluray player, but then you probably wouldn't convert to DVD format for that.

Out of curiosity, I took a SBS 3D video and used Avisynth to open it while resizing it to 720x576 (PAL DVD dimensions). I displayed it full screen with MPC-HC set to output a 16:9 aspect ratio and the TV set to 1080p. I basically simulated a conversion to DVD, without any re-encoding loss of quality. It looked pretty blurry at the much lower resolution. 720x480 (NTSC) would no doubt look worse. And of course I could ensure the aspect ratio remained correct. The DVD version might display in a slightly wider than 16:9 aspect ratio which would make it look more blurry.
I wouldn't bother myself. Even at 1080p, 3D can be a bit hard on the eyes at times, but when it's also blurry.....

The 3D movie file is in mp4 format (side by side), this file is stored in USB stick and I want to play it by sticking it into the USB port on my Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player, it could not display because the video's format was MP4 and apparently the player can play only avi.
That'd be unusual..... only playing AVI. Not impossible, but unusual. What's the model of the Bluray player?
Your brother's 3D TV..... does it have a built in media player? If it's not terribly old it probably does. Pretty much every TV manufactured these days has a built in USB media player which will play all sort of files.

Already answered/explained in posts #7 and #9 above, which you would have known if you had bothered to read.

@jetskr1la, please post a detailed MediaInfo report of one of those mp4 files...

Also, visually does it play (on your PC) in side-by-side layout or what?

    Hello Scott

Yes it plays on my Dell Desktop with 3.5 GHZ CPU
side by side dual screens. with standard dvd play from
computer. But I have a ASUS ext DVD BD player i have
not tried it from there yet. I don't think the ASUS is a blu ray
player just a writer player but maybe wrong. I can get the picture
from the computer to my 3D TV vis hdmi from computer to hdmi inputs
but need to try finding a way to force the 3D picture for the 3D TV to
change the format to real 3D.
I have and view now 2d with side by side pictures in HD quality no problems.
I read this but was not sure if post #7 & 9 pertained to my exact situation or not.

Of course I will use the 3d TV and 3D player and in hopes it will play the 3D Movie file to make it all work.
As I know it takes all 3 of the 3D unit to work together, to play the 3d. But i need to take the MP4 file and
convert it to MKV or DivX to play on my Panasonic 3D player to send it to the Plasma 3d TV, just hope the
automatic sensing changes to 3D mode on the TV.

    Thanks

THE FLASH DISC and work with the 3D PLAYER TO WORK WITH THE TV Panasonic ?

Or how can I convert the MP4 to disc to MKV format so I can burn it on the disc and work
and play with both Panasonic dvd player and 3D TV. can MP4 be converted to work as a
MKV file format and saved to 8.7 DL disc.

Thanks for any help you experts ?

The 3D movie file is in mp4 format (side by side), this file is stored in USB stick and I want to play it by sticking it into the USB port on my Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player, it could not display because the video's format was MP4 and apparently the player can play only avi.

    Hello
The Panasonic plays MKV and DivX format only with FLASH DISC PLUGGED INTO THE PANASONIC 3D PLAYER ONLY,
THAT WHY IT CANT PLAY THE AVI FORMAT.

You don't want to use the DivX format unless you have to, as it is no longer the best option.

Just so you understand, a "divx" file is actually (usually) a divx (aka xvid aka mpeg4-part2)-encoded video stream + audio stream (various formats) encapsulated in an *.AVI file. The file might have the extension renamed to *.DIVX, but it still is in essence an AVI.

Note that newer "DIVX" versions have abandoned the AVI container base and are now using the MKV container base. They have also migrated from MPEG4-part2 encoding of the video to h.264/AVC (aka MPEG4-part10)-encoding (with HEVC encoding in the wings).

    *******************

What I suggest you do is remux your current MP4(s) to MKV. Do NOT re-encode! That would lose quality. You have a number of options for apps:
    MKVMergeGUI
    AVIDemux (copy mode)
    XVid4psp (copy mode)
MP42MKVac3 (this one re-encodes the audio, though)
but one of the simplest and most straightforward ones is ffmpeg, IMO.

This batch script should work for you...
    Code:
    for %%a in ("*.mp4") do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -c copy -metadata stereo_mode=left_right "%%~na.mkv"
    pause
What this will NOT do is set the mk3d metadata tag to HSbS. This may or may NOT be necessary in order for your player app to auto recognize the file as being a particular type of 3D and auto engage 3D mode on your TV. If it is necessary, you will need to (manually) set the meta tag in something like MakeMKV...

...just added the metadata that SHOULD take care of the mk3d tagging for you in ffmpeg. What you might still want to try is changing the extension from *.MKV to *.MK3D, if necessary.
