    Hi,

I've downloaded a wmv file. It plays well, but when I try to seek or move to a location I want, the slider just snaps right back to the beginning. The movie is long, so I can't watch it all in one go, but now every time I have to start from the beginning. Any help or suggestion of how to fix this? Thanks

As I said it plays ok, just seeking doesn't work. And I was hoping someone who really knows would answer.

  4. I agree with zoobie; probably a corrupt file - you could try to download it again.

You can sometimes get VLC to play & seek corrupt files

video fixer (trialware) can fix some files, I've only had limited success with it though

    Good luck

    Download this and unzip

    asfbin1.6.1.703.zip

Drag your WMV file into the unzipped folder and double click "Reindex.bat"

    Complete

    Guys,

Is there a software that reports what audio/video codecs and their parameters are used in a video file (asf, wmv, avi, etc.) and if some part of the file is broken? In short, diagnostics tool for video.

That asfbin repair tool helped me with this exact same problem. And it took seconds. Thank you!!!

I didn't know you could do that. I've been using asftools.

  10. Note that high compression codecs typically store a list of keyframes at the end of the file. That list is what lets them quickly seek to anywhere in the video. When that list is missing, even if the rest of the video is intact, it's much harder to seek within the file because the player would have to go to the first frame, then read every frame of the video until it reaches the requested frame. This can take many seconds, even minutes with a long video. Most players don't bother with this and will just ignore the seek request or start playing from the first frame again. Re-indexing is the process of rebuilding that index and adding the new index to the end of the file.
