Is there a way to take an mp4 file with aac audio, edit the audio volume so certain parts are louder, some are quieter (say I just want to mute a section), without transcoding/re-encoding the video stream? I don't really care if the audio has to be re-encoded.

I'm sure something like Premiere could do this, but are there any free/cheap tools that'll do the job?

Here's the media info for a file I'm working with, in case it helps:

    Thanks!

It's possible to do that by
    • demuxing the clip into its audio and video streams with, say, MP4Box
    • opening the audio stream in Audacity and do a combination of limiting and dynamic range compression, then saving to another audio file
    • remuxing saved processed new audio clip with the video to create new MP4 file
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

You may be able to just drag the video file into GoldWave without demuxing. It will decompress only the audio to a workable WAV file.
