Recently I can't seem to make AutoGK finish a conversion to avi.
Something seems to happen when it gets to the VistualDub stage and it stops there.
I reinstalled both programs, but to no avail.
What should I check or do?

I need to convert this DVD file to something I could show on a website with some quality.
Until I get some help on my problems with AutoGK, I made some tests with Tipard, but all the avi options I tried ended up with a very very low quality image. On a phone might be, but not a computer screen, whatever the size.
What file format can be used on a web site? These files will not be long, less than two minutes each or so. -
You appear to have just over 1 minute of video and are trying to make an avi of 700 meg. It could be coughing at the compression since you are expanding and not compressing.
Try a file-size setting of 15-20 meg and see what happens.
BTW AutoGK does not use VirtualDub. It uses VirtualDubMod. That wull be installed as part of the installation process. Any other installation of VD will be ignored. -
Same thing. I tried it with 20Mb, even reinstalled VirtualDudMOD, but nothing.
It stops on the compressibility test. -
If it worked fine 'before' then the chances are that you installed something since which has screwed it up. Only you know what you have installed.
You can try other conversion programs such as Total Video Converter -
Yes, unfortunately it's likely something I did inadvertently, some other program I installed, changed something and that is the result. There are games, for instance, that were working fine and now refuse to.
It's quite likely I will re-install my Windows again.
In the meantime I will give TVC a try. Thanks. -
There's a slightly more recent version of VitualDubMod than the one AutoGK installs. You could try deleting everything in the AutoGK/VirtualDubMod folder (or whatever it's called) and replacing the old files with the new ones (version 1.5.10.2).
If you do, run VirtualDubMod manually once before using AutoGK. That'll let you click through any VirtualDubMod welcome screen and preferences. If you don't, VirtualDubMod can sit there waiting for you to do so when AutoGK runs it, even though no welcome screen appears (or it appears minimised so you don't realise that's what it is).
Have you rebooted? Every so often I found AutoGK would fail to open files because they were locked, even though they shouldn't be, or AutoGK should be the program doing the locking. In your case though, I think "EXCEPTION: Open avi failed" means it's not able to write the AVI file). If none of the above helps, try setting the output directory to a completely different location. -
OK, it did work this time.
I first opened VirtualDubMod and then AutoGK. Also used a different output directory.
I'm not sure what did the trick.
Thanks. -
I was referring to updating VirtualDubMod separately. The hidden welcome screen "got me" a couple of times.
VirtualDubMod is safe to update. I'm pretty sure the only difference between the version AutoGK installs and the last version released was a few bug fixes. It's safe to update the LAME encoder. I'm not sure if I ever updated anything else aside from Avisynth, but probably not. It's been a while since I've had AutoGK installed and my memory isn't the best.
You definitely shouldn't use a different version of Xvid though. That's a recipe for disaster.
You can also update the shortcuts AutoGK creates. Open one and change the target to add -multi to it. Like this:
"C:\Program Files\AutoGK\AutoGK.exe" -multi
Then you can run more than one instance of AutoGK at a time, which is nice considering Xvid doesn't always keep a multi-core CPU overly busy. If you do, always make sure each instance is set to output files to a different location or things can get messy.Last edited by hello_hello; 3rd Apr 2014 at 16:11.
