I've been doing this in Premiere for years, but it's honestly tiring. I think it can be done easier in Avisynth.

    What I need is this:

A vertical white translucent bar that
    - can have feathered edges
    - can have the translucence % raised or lowered easily

The goal is overscan ghosting removal.

I can remove most ghosting, but that part is always annoying.
I hate firing up Premiere, and creating masks in Photoshop. It takes too long.

    Help?

After farting around with this, I think an overlay will still be required.
I can use VirtualDub + Photoshop + Avisynth instead. It's less headache than Premiere.

    Ah well. Worth a try.

Overlay of what? Part of the source video? You could do that with a Crop() in AviSynth. Then use the white bar and mask with Overlay(). Hence the building of a mask in my pseudo script.
