What are these 'rainbowing' artifacts and how/why do they appear? I'm currently making a montage from VHS tapes (also from a basketball game) and have the same sorta issue.

Looks like an old recording on the tape hasn't been fully erased, not uncommon to see this at the beginning of recordings because the first part of the recording hasn't gone past the erase head.

Chroma errors from lack of flying erase head on reused tape.

    Easy one.

You can filter that out in VirtualDub, with the Camcorder Color Denoise filter.

  5. Shameless bump..

Well, my editing in my montage is looking great, only problem is, I cant seem to get these weird black "frames" removed from my capture. Any clue on what this flickering is about?

(using pinnacle studio movie box to output to tape-originally mpeg2 files-and digitize them..)
