Real newbie editing. Explosions, light sabers etc.

Hello everyone, my first time on here. I am not a computer guy at all but I would love to start editing videos (explosions! light sabers, etc) but I am unsure as to what software to get. Does anybody have a recommendation as to which one is good and easy lot master?

for lightsaber effect - all you need is after effects.

for explosions -> Blender, Maya, Softimage, Houdini - no not easy .. but fun ? absolutey
