  1. Is there any way to know the media code of discs before buying them?

For instance, I'm looking at the Dynex dvd+r dl at Best Buy. I don't know if they are the good MKM discs or the junk Ritek discs.

Sadly no. In the cae of large sales often you can find reports of what others are getting but otherwise its a gamble.

Now some things are clear winners. Such as any Fuji disk that say Made in Japan are always TYs.

Otherwise thats why its better to buy from online stores. That way you know what you get.

Depends on where you buy from. I order all my blank media from www.svp.co.uk and they always state the media code.

  6. I'm with Waheed - the stores will not likely know or care who make their discs, but the reputable on-line stores are more "specialist" and are used to picky customers like us wanting to know what they're buying !

Since you mention Best Buy I'm guessing you aren't in the UK, so SVP probably won't help you. But take a look anyway and you'll see what we mean - all of their media is clearly listed with a manufacturer code. If you can't get this out of the retailer then buy with caution, and don't pay any attention to "quality, dark purple dyes" and similar such sales pitches as the shade of the disc is largely circumstantial.
