What does it mean if a DVD (or a CD) burns successfully, but the verification process fails?

It's happened a lot lately, but the disc seems to play OK, so what's going on? I use ImgBurn, and the same thing has been happening with info CDs burned with Nero.

Are these still 'good' discs? Or what?

How do I know if the burner is going bad, or if it might be something else going on?

  2. Assuming that we a talking about a video file, then the player or software player can sluff over a few bad bytes without catastrophic results. The verification process tells the user if ANY bytes are not verified. If the verification shows allot of bad results then it could very well be poor media (most likely) or the drive. CDRW or DVDRW are more prone to verification errors than regular media, so it would be wise to not use them for data but video may be acceptable for one time viewing.
Tell what media is being used? If the info is not readily avaibable, put a disc in the drive, open ImgBurn, pick write from the menu and view the table for the media in the right panel.

90% of the time that scenario is just bad media. Buy better media. Verbatim 8x or 16x (no value media).
