Hi all
I'm new to the forum - I have to say I wish I'd found this place weeks ago, it would have saved me loads of hassle!
I'm embarking on a project to back up a number of DVDs and Blu-rays in my collection. My current approach is as follows:
- Use MakeMKV to rip a high quality MKV of the video file
- Use Handbrake to encode into a MP4 file
I'm not bothered about other disc features, I just want good quality video with a 5.1 audio track. Not bothered about subtitles either.
I also want the file to be playable on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and via my WDTV Live streamer.
The above approach seems to work fine for HD content but I'm struggling with anything SD. I've read the Handbrake guide to interlaced content etc but I can't seem to get the correct settings to encode the video correctly.
If I can use as an example - I'm trying to back up my Season 1 Dexter set. I've used MediaInfo to analyse the ripped MKV file which gives me the following details:
I'm using the following Handbrake settings:Code:General Unique ID : 15438754772376948969177108609159836369 (0xB9D65610B26BE76A204CBC511A6B2D1) Complete name : C:\CDH\Video\DEXTER_SEASON_1_DISC_1\Dexter S01E01.mkv Format : Matroska Format version : Version 2 File size : 2.10 GiB Duration : 50mn 50s Overall bit rate mode : Variable Overall bit rate : 5 910 Kbps Encoded date : UTC 2012-05-10 19:22:52 Writing application : MakeMKV v1.7.4 win(x86-release) Writing library : libmakemkv v1.7.4 (1.2.0/1.1.0) win(x86-release) Video ID : 1 Format : MPEG Video Format version : Version 2 Format profile : Main@Main Format settings, BVOP : No Format settings, Matrix : Custom Codec ID : V_MPEG2 Codec ID/Info : MPEG 1 or 2 Video Duration : 50mn 50s Bit rate mode : Variable Bit rate : 5 024 Kbps Maximum bit rate : 9 800 Kbps Width : 720 pixels Height : 576 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate : 25.000 fps Standard : PAL Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Interlaced Scan order : Top Field First Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.485 Stream size : 1.78 GiB (85%) Language : English Default : No Forced : No Audio #1 ID : 2 Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Mode extension : CM (complete main) Format settings, Endianness : Big Codec ID : A_AC3 Duration : 50mn 50s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 384 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Bit depth : 16 bits Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 140 MiB (6%) Title : 3/2+1 Language : English Default : Yes Forced : No Audio #2 ID : 3 Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Mode extension : CM (complete main) Format settings, Endianness : Big Codec ID : A_AC3 Duration : 50mn 50s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 384 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Bit depth : 16 bits Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 140 MiB (6%) Title : 3/2+1 Language : French Default : No Forced : No Text #1 ID : 4 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : Danish Default : Yes Forced : No Text #2 ID : 5 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : English Default : No Forced : No Text #3 ID : 6 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : French Default : No Forced : No Text #4 ID : 7 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : Dutch Default : No Forced : No Text #5 ID : 8 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : Norwegian Default : No Forced : No Text #6 ID : 9 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : Finnish Default : No Forced : No Text #7 ID : 10 Format : VobSub Codec ID : S_VOBSUB Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs Language : Swedish Default : No Forced : No Menu 00:00:00.000 : en:Chapter 01 00:06:02.160 : en:Chapter 02 00:09:44.760 : en:Chapter 03 00:19:13.600 : en:Chapter 04 00:31:05.560 : en:Chapter 05 00:41:03.400 : en:Chapter 06 00:49:21.440 : en:Chapter 07
Anamorphic: Loose (modulus 16)

Decomb: Default
CQ: 18
Variable frame rate (same as source)
Auto passthru on audio track
Advanced settings:
However the resulting video is showing a lot of distortion, particularly at the top of the video (screenshots attached). I'm using VLC to view the videos as a test so I'm sure it's not a hardware / codec issue. The source MKV is also fine - I have played this using VLC and encounter no issues so I'm confident the source is good quality.Code:rc-lookahead=50:ref=4:bframes=0:cabac=0:8x8dct=0:weightp=0:subq=9:me=esa:merange=32
If anyone can give me a few pointers as to how to overcome this issue it would be massively appreciated! I'm not averse to trying a different approach, but most of the guides I've seen elsewhere seem to point to a combination of MakeMKV / Handbrake as the choice to achieve what I'm aiming for.
Cheers
Chris

Try skip the makemkv step. Rip to a VIDEO_TS folder with for example dvdfab decrypter and then select the video_ts folder in handbrake.

There's a program similar to HandBrake called XMedia Recode and it has a TON of presets, including one for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
I know this because my mother bought that tablet for herself as a Christmas present in 2011 and I've tried encoding video for her but I find that it has a REALLY hard time with 720p video (at least when the bitrate goes high). I've had better success with SD (Standard Definition) video although I'm still trying to figure out the bitrates limits to achieve good 720p results (without frame dropping). Problem is I only see her about once every 2 weeks and so I don't get to test the tablet very often LOL
I did get some SD samples that played back fine and I made those with HandBrake used a 1:1 pixel ratio (so full screen 720x480 from a DVD became 640x480). The problem is I did that so long ago I can't remember how I did it now LOL
I do know that the video shows up in MediaInfo as BaseLine @ 3.0"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci
