I have an .avi file and I want to add in a .ass file into it. How do you do that?

    If you want switchable subtitles:
You could try avimuxgui, but I guess it only supports srt. And you must have vobsub /vsfilter installed to be able to see the subtitles in the avi file.

Or make a mkv using mkvtoolnix, add the avi and the subs.

Or do you want permanent / hardcoded subs in the avi?

  4. You have to re-encode to burn the subtitles in.

Using avidemux is one option, that supports .ass/.ssa subs

    1) Open your video

    2) In the video sidebar select XviD, configure your options, like bitrate or quality, etc..

    3) In the video sidebar press "filters" => subtitles => ASS . Then load your subtitles and configure your options like margins & spacing. You can preview it by pressing the preview button, or "output" view from the top drop down menu

    4) You can leave the audio sidebar as "copy", this is like vdub's direct stream copy and retains the original audio

    5) Format => AVI

    6) Press save with extension (e.g. "myfile.avi")

    Cheers

You can't have (permanent) hardcoded subs without re-encoding, and I don't think .avi container supports .ass subs

If you want selectable subs, you can put it into an .mkv container with mkvmergegui

If you just want to be able to playback(view), install directvobsub and keep the 2 files separate with the same name:

    file.avi
    file.ass

I think Midzuki may be correct. Avi-Mux GUI says it supports SSA and this is the same thing as ASS. Maybe you only need to rename your subtitle file to .ssa to use this program.

Technically speaking, .ASS means "SSA version 4.00+".
Modify the file header with Notepad or Wordpad --- this should
make the subtitle file acceptable to AVI-Mux GUI.

P.S.: Keep in mind that NOT ALL applications can handle AVIs containing
embedded subtitles. MPC works fine. As for WMP, Gspot, MP4Box and MPlayer, ...
    well...

  13. Can someone tell me why after re-encoding subtitles seem to appear a bit early than they are supposed to? Does anyone know how to correct this?

  16. You can also give AviRecomp a go.
It has an option to burn in subs I believe.
