I don't know what you mean by too big files, but there is going to be a loss of quality if you compress the video. I don't think there are any formats that are good enough to overcome that irrespective of what you want to play the files on. Especially with captured VHS video ... the quality isn't all that great to begin with. That makes it harder to compress, not easier. Post mediainfo text output of one of these avi files.

Why would you record the output of a DVD. Just put the DVD in your computer and just rip the MPEG2 original file, which would be many times smaller than lossless HuffYUV.

For VHS, x264 would help to shrink the file down. Use one of the slow presets and a CRF of 18 or lower should retain most of the original image.

My DVD recorder burner is spoilt. It jam there. Can open but can't close and can't read. No idea where to replace too.. So no choice I had to capture the video out.

From another thread I gather he's using a Panasonic ES10 in passthrough mode for it's line TBC.

well...i'd just run it through handbrake with high quality CRF with MP4 or MKV output.

    I had 2 DVD recorder.
Vhs will bypass es10 . While the normal one, I will need to cap out as the burner is spoilt.
