    Installed any codec pack?
May also be the DirectShow is hosed. Try reregistering quartz.dll (search this site for "quartz.dll" for plenty of info).

I think you misunderstod me; Codec packs are the safest way to make your system unusable.
    tried this too www.xpcodecpack.com
The "too" in this sentence indicates you've tried other codec packs too? If so, that's probably the root of your problems.

    You bet!
Been there, done that. Never got my system back 100% until I reinstalled Windows, in fact. You can try Codec Sniper and other apps of the same vein, but they require you to know what you're doing. Start by uninstalling all codec pack(s) you may have installed. Then use Codec Sniper or similar app to remove what the uninstall has left behind.
All you need for 95% of all video playback is ffdshow. Add QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative, and you're pretty much covered. If you find a file that wont play, use GSpot to identify what codec it needs, download and install that and only that codec.

Do not install ffdshow ... it will mask the issues that should be solved first ... always .

    ----

    0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because:

    1) You are trying to play a file that is NOT supported by the player.

    2) You are trying to play a file that the player DOES support , but the file was compressed by using a codec that is NOT supported by the Player.

    3) You are trying to play one part of a multipart file. Use a newsreader or other program to combine the files, and then try again.

    4) The file type is supported, but you are trying to play it in a way that is not supported by the Player. For example, you may have attempted to drag a DVD file with a .vob extension from a DVD to the Windows Media Player icon.

    ----

Supported files types in Windows Media Player are:

Music CD Playback (CD audio) .cda

Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) .aif, .aifc, and .aiff

Windows Media audio and video files .asf, .asx, .wax, .wm, .wma, .wmd, .wmp, .wmv, .wmx, .wpl, and .wvx

Windows audio and video files .avi and .wav

    Windows Media Player skins .wmz

Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa, .mpe, .mp2v*, and .mpv2

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) .mid, .midi, and .rmi

    Microsoft Recorded TV Show .dvr-ms

    AU (UNIX) .au and .snd

    MP3 .mp3 and .m3u

    DVD video .vob

    Macromedia Flash .swf

*To play .mp2v files, you must have a software or hardware
DVD decoder installed on your computer.

    ----

Uninstall xvid codec or codec packs including it , and restart pc .

Install codecs as individual codecs only when required ... in this case , reinstall just the xvid codec .

    ----

This program helps with directshow issues .

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm , download the program , and run scan , follow the web page info .

    ----

    http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/How_to_install_default_codecs_in_Windows_XP_2000.htm

    http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/How_to_install_uninstall_DLL_and_AX_files.htm (example refers to quartz.dll)

Unregistering and re-registering quartz.dll may not work .

    ====

    Agree with mats.hogberg

I had 2 issues , in directshow filters , one audio , one video .
Used tool to repair sellected , broke 100+ out of 348 .
Ran process twice more (none sellected) ... all fixed on second run .
    Almost wipeout time .
