I was wondering if I can plug an external dvd writer with USB 2.0 cor into an older computer that has a 1.0 port. Will this cause problems

just speeds.. it will run very slow.. usb 1 is 12mbs where 2 is 480mbs or there abouts.. so your burner will run very slow.. prolly 1xish

nope - no problems ..
USB 2 is forty times faster than USB 1 also --

Hello,
Exactly. Usb 2.0 is BACKWARDS compatible with USB 1.0. The barrier - SPEED. It'll work but not as fast as a 2.0

Yeah should work at slow speed. Or convert to firewire and live in a better world.

If it's your burner AND your computer, you're wasting performance using USB 1.1. The cheapest route to better performance is to install a USB2 card in the older PC. If it has PCI slots (anything with USB SHOULD), you can pick up a card for $30 at Staples.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
With what Flaystus said, you can also get the cards that have both USB 2.0 and Firewire.
