    Hi,

I am looking for the cheapest Sony Digital8 camera that has the analog-digital pass through and the ability to read HI8 tapes and then output uncompressed to a computer using Firewire/I.Link.

I am looking to buy a camcorder strictly for this purpose (converting Hi8 tapes to digital format).

What are the Sony models that support this functionality?

Searching on google, it came out that the Sony DCR-TRV460 is the cheapest model to that.

Any help and info is appreciated.

    Thanks!

I will probably try to snatch a used one off eBay... So even the out of production models would be fine.

    Thanks!

I have a DCR-TRV120 that allows that, it's middle range I think and has performed pretty well in analog>digital VHS transfers that I've done.

Does it read Hi8 tapes and output those via i.Link as well?

    Yes to both questions.

Also reads original 8mm, which is why I got it many moons ago.

I have the TRV-350 and it does what you want as well.
I've been very pleased with the results from it.

The TRV-828 does this too: reads Digital8, Hi8, or Video8 tapes, and puts them all out via Firewire as DV.

You might be able to find a TR7000 or TR8000, top spec that do what you need them to do but without the LCD screen on the side so are dirt cheap second hand.

  10. Hello, as Richard G seems to point out in this thread, can anyone else who knows from experience confirm that the Sony DCR TRV 7000 has analog to digital passthrough?
