    Hi,

I have recently bought a TV that connects to my Harddrive and am trying to convert my DVD collection to MP4 so I can save space and access my films digitally. I have tried a number of free convertors including AVC, handbrake and Xmedia Recode and Vidcoder. Only Vidcoder completes the process however the converted MP4 stutters, and is quite distorted. Do you have any tips on how I can clarify?

I have followed set instructions from one of the help threads but anytime I tweak the settings the result is the same.

Any help you can give would be gratefully appreciated

The output log is below for information

    Thanks

    Jamie

  3. Use DVDFab HD to rip DVD on your HDD in Main movie mode. This will remove any copy protection DVD video has and it will copy only main movie and audio and subtitles you choose. Then try to encode using VidCoder or Handbrake. You also may need to activate detelecine or deinterlace, depending on the way DVD video is created.

    Hi Detmek,

Thanks for the info. I've just used DVD fab which has ripped the DVD seamlessly. Thank you. However the audio stream has not transferred. I have used options

    codec passthrough
    fallback AAC (avcodec)
    Target stream any
    scope any

Please can you help me a little further.

did you use mdeiaInfo to verify the new file
i think DVD copied the audio, but your TV doesn't play that stream
MP4 is a container just like AVI or MKV
what video CODECS will your TV play
most play DViX and Xvid in AVi and other containers and likely MP3 audio and maybe ACC

    Hi theewizard,

I'm not sure what mediainfo is I'm afraid

Dvd fab has copied the DVD to my harddrive and the audiostream is attached and in sync with the video at this point. But then once vidcoder converts to mp4 the sound is missing. I've still only tried the mp4 file on my laptop not yet trialled on tv.

MediaInfo is a free utility that lists tech information about video files. To quote the description from the videohelp Tools section (https://www.videohelp.com/software ).

MediaInfo supplies technical and tag information about a video or audio file. Supported formats: Video : MKV, OGM, MP4, AVI, MPG, VOB, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DVD, WMV, ASF, DivX, XviD, MOV (Quicktime), SWF(Flash), FLV, FLI, RM/RMVB. Audio : OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, AIFF, WMA.
For most users a modified version called MediaInfoXP is a better choice. It has no installer, just copy the utility to your desktop or another folder and double-click to run. Get it here: https://www.videohelp.com/software/MediaInfoXP. If you want complete info on a video file, use the "Text" View which can be copied like any text readout and pasted into a forum post.

Dvd fab has a ripper and converter options
It can copy the movie to your hard drive in a converted format
You don't need to use two different steps..
Your problem is the incorrect use/setting off vidcoder
Still you need to verify what formats and codecs your tv can play..before doing conversions
Just because your pc will play some file does not mean your tv will

    ok
so what is wrong with letting DVDfab rip/create mp4 videos with correct audio
why the hang up on the two step process and MKV
the resolution, file size and quality will all be nearly IF not exactly the same
have you tried this ,, so you can compare them
it will be much simpler to use a one program one step process

I didn't realise dvd fab would convert too, it's copied the DVD file to my harddisc but kept in same format - audio/video folder and vob files.

Happy with that solution I just expected it to be compact as 1 file, and was advised that mp4 was best to also watch on iPad

copying means copying NOT converting changing
Ripping used to mean copying..but as changed meaning.. to mean converting on the fly
its in the DVD menu RIP.. you get one file the main movie ..converted ..ready to play
