I have a WMV video which uses the VC-1 format and WVC1 codec. I tried converting it to an mp4 with AVS video converter. AVS will convert it....partially , however, it only converts the bottom half of the screen and the top half is just black (screenshot below). The WMV plays in WMP 12 and MPC with the full picture, but I have had issues with this format/codec before. When it comes to seeking I cannot seek with the exception of roughly the first and last minute of the video. I am looking for a way I can fully and properly convert this to MP4. It would be great if there was a way to get AVS to do it, but if necessary I can always use another software.

Not sure if it's relevant, but I have klite codec pack installed. Also, in ffdshow, in the codecs section, the VC-1 format was disabled the first time I tried converting. I enabled it and did not change anything. Full video info is also listed below. Thanks for any help.

We don't use avs video converter here....so try their support.

Or just try another converter for this videoclip, like freemake video converter. Just be sure to deselect all toolbars when you install it. Or Handbrake, Video to Video Converter, Tencoder, etc...all free.

Is there anything wrong with AVS video converter? It's listed on the tools/downloads page? Besides now, I havn't had any problems with it, and its not just AVS, solveigMM video splitter, Avidemux, WMP 12, MPC... all have issues of one sort or another with this format/codec.

All those converters you listed should work with the VC-1 format and WVC1 codec?

Is there anything wrong with AVS video converter?
It costs 60$ while there are good free alternatives, I think that's what Baldrick meant.

If you had trouble with other programs too, then maybe your file is the source of the problem. I convert VC-1 content with SmallX264 and DVD2x264 (HandBrake GUIs) without a problem.

Also you can post a small sample (no larger then 50-100 mb maybe).

16 bit video is most likely a mediainfo mistake. wouldn't worry about it.

I doubt its the file, because I've had these same things happen before. And its the same problems in the same programs. Its the only format/codec that's ever given me these problems. Thanks for the suggestions though (everyone) I'll give some of them a try.

BTW... if I'm not mistaken, Handbrake comes with it's own native GUI right? Any particular reason you use a different GUI, other than personal preference? Just curious.

Hmmm, MediaInfo says the video IS NOT interlaced, so I guess the problematic ASF file was muxed improperly.

Yes, multiplexing in wrong (or in uncommon) ways can lead to issues with this or with that application,
    see for example

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1490212#post1490212

and in cases like that, remuxing is the way to go

Another "video converter" which sucks at ASF muxing is Mainconcept Reference ---

--- it does manage to flag video as audio and vice-versa

    Two main reasons:
    1) I don't like official GUI.
    2) I develop these tools so they are configured according to my needs.

  10. Premiere Elements also has an issue with WMV files where the top half of the video is blacked out. Microsoft updates kb2803821 (on Windows 7) or kb2834904 (on Windows XP) are the main culprits. The temporary solution is to uninstall the update.

Thanks lweight. Good to know about that update. I ended up using Tencoder. Got the job done.
