  1. I've recorded VHS > DVD+R on a Panasonic DVD recorder, with a top menu. The DVD seems to play ok on my Mac in DVD Player.

However MPEGStreamclip reports an error when I try and import the first Vob.
VLC will also not play the first Vob and says it has 0 bytes.

MediaInfo reports info that I know is completely incorrect (eg states it's NTSC when it's PAL, reposrts screen dimensions as half what they actually are, etc). So I guess the header might be screwed? How do I fix the vob? The other 3 on the disc appear to be ok.

When you start at VOB2, is there anything missing from what you recorded?

Also....HalfD1 (LP or SLP in VHS terms) recording looks this way.

Yes, the first 15 minutes is missing if I start from Vob2. (ie, the length of Vob1)

  5. ProjectX might be able to extract and fix the audio&video stream

  6. Is ProjectX not Windows only? I'm looking for Mac solution.

I've tried MPEGStreamclip again and ignored the import errors. I tried to re-save the vob as mpeg, but it throws an error and stops encoding at the exact point the second title within the vob occurs.

It was recorded in XP mode on the DVD recorder. The image is definately full PAL size when I watch it back in DVD Player.
I think the header for that file has been written wrongly by the DVD recorder. MediaInfo declares the vob is 0.36 seconds long!

Is there anything that can strip/re-write/ignore the header?

  7. No, ProjectX is a Java based program and only needs to be compiled on a Mac.
Which might be a bit tricky if you haven't compiled java source code before,..
I had to do the following:
    1. download and install Java SDK
    2. download ProjectX
    3. open a terminal and go to my Download folder and there into the ProjectX folder
      cd ~/Downloads/Project-X_0.91.0
    4. make the build script executable
      chmod +x build.sh
    5. call the build script
      ./build.sh
-> this created a ProjectX.jar file which I can double click inside Finder and thus start ProjectX
    6. copied all files ProjectX uses into a new folder named 'ProjectX', zipped and attached it here
So in theory, if you install a Java Runtime (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html) on your Mac you should be able to use ProjectX by extracting the ProjectX.zip and double clicking on the ProjectX.jar file. (haven't tested)

  8. Thanks for your help Selur, but I'm running OSX 10.6.8 and the Java install requires 10.7, so ProjectX eludes me.
