Trying to encode small clips (2 to 3 minutes) from DVD's to a video format that Quicktime (6 and above) and WMP (8 and above) can play. Using TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress. Trying MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 as the output formats but Quicktime can't seem to play them while WMP can. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is MPEG the way to go or can I try something else? The goal is to have an output that Quicktime and WMP can play.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

Quicktime absolutely is capable of MPEG-1 playback. So is WMP. MPEG-2 playback depends on a codec that doesn't install by default on Windows machines.
One of the good things about MPEG-1 is that it's patent free and I've not seen an operating system yet that can't support it. A few years ago I even got MPEG-1 playback working on a fairly old Sun machine and it was the only video format I could get to work on it.
