I have some avi files with resolutions 512x384, 544x400, 624x464 that display with black bars to the right and left on a 16:9 wide screen TV. Is it possible to convert them easily to a 16:9 resolution without making video quality worse?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

Any conversion will further reduce the quality

There is a way that has some visual success:
Try Deemon's Video Enhancer to upscale your sources to 720x576/480. Better output to mjpeg.
Then, load to virtualdub, add filters (like msu-deblocking) and re-encode to mpeg 2 of something else, adding the 16:9 flag.
It's the better way to upscale with software any source at the time being. It's better zooming.
