My girlfriend wants to make backups for her brother when they get broken, stepped on, etc.

For windows I've used the DVD Shrink/Nero combo, and installed Vista on her mac so she can do backups in less than 4 clicks.

I would like to do the save for Mac, however I can't find that right "4 button" method.

Currently I use Mac The Ripper to save the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders (easy).

I try to use DVD2One, using default options so that it will shrink those folders and automatically burn on a DVD, but there's always something wacky going on, whether it says "cannot create .dmg image" or it will only make a 1MB result.

So let's just say I'm a newb and would like to know the easiest way to burn a disc with as little option playing as possible

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Join the MacTheRipper forums, donate, get the latest version of MTR.
    (3.0.14j)

    2. Pay for a full featured copy of DVD2ONEX ( v. 2.1.3).

    3. Make sure you have enough HD space equal to what you are doing.

If a Factory DVD is 8GB, and a Compressed DVD is 4GB,then you need
    roughly 15GB of free space.

    4. Buy a Copy of Toast 8.

Once you have done all that:

Step 1. Rip the DVD with MTR.

Step 2. Compress the DVD with DVD2ONEX.
Make sure to read in the forums of MTR what specific issues exists
with what DVDs, as many cannot be done as FULL DISC, but as
    MOVIE ONLY backups.

Step 3. Author as a Video_TS folder in DVD2ONEX when shrinking,
NOT as a Disc Image. This way, you can test the playback of the shrink
    before wasting time burning.

Step 4. Burn as a DVD-Rom(UDF) disc in Toast, drag/dropping the
    outputted Video_TS from DVD2ONEX.

That's my short and sweet guide for Newbies.

Ok thanks, I was hoping there would be an easier way though. ^_^

I'll stick to my MTR/DVD/Toast combo

Toast will also do the shrinking of the movie portion. If I remember correctly, once you've ripped the DVD to a VIDEO_TS folder, drag the first VOB of the actual movie to Toast and let it load in the entire movie. Toast contains Roxio's Popcorn app and this will shrink down the movie to fit the media you have. You will, however, not get the subtitles, etc.

Let us know if this helps.

    Merry Xmas!

I can't speak to DVD2One so I won't, but you don't need it. You said easy so here is easy.
Get a copy of MacTheRipper and a copy of Toast 8 Titanium. Amazon.com has Toast pretty cheap around $78.

1)Use MacTheRipper to capture the DVD to the hard drive. Just stick the original in the drive and launch MTR and hit GO.
2)Launch Toast. On the left hand menu select "Video" then Video_TS folder.
3)On the right click Select and find the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD copy on the Hard Drive.
4)On the lower right click Fit-to-DVD-compression option.
    5)Stick in a blank DVD.
6)In the lower right click the giant red button.
    7)Click Record on the popup.
Go have a coffee with the girlfriend. In about 45 mins give or take Toast will compress and burn the DVD.

This is what I do. I had to go all through this searching and reading instructions and brainac smarty pants gobbly-gook to figure this simple thing out. It's amazing to me how complicated these people can make this. And the answer before you ask is "no" you cannot burn DVD without Toast so don't even ask lest you want to spend a week hearing all the answers then wind up buying Toast anyway. Toast is awesome anyway. Just buy it. DVD2One is optional. You are on your own with that one.

easy until you buy a Sony/Universal disc made in the last two years, and you want to make a copy.
Then you'll be glad you bought DVD2ONEX.
    *shrugs*

And I resent the term "gobble gook". If something's over your head, we get that,
just ask and we'll D U M B it down for you. But often, the steps are the steps,
    for a specific reason.

My process is just like terryj's.

Add that process to good media like Taiyo Yuden and burner like a Pioneer, you can't miss.

The only thing I've used my internal Matshita drive for is to load Leopard onto my iMac.

  10. I'm using Leopard and can't get my version of MTR to remain stable.
Can anyone suggest a good alternative that rips quickly?
Trying to get through the crap on the MTR forum to actually donate and get a copy is a damn nightmare, any ideas on ow to cut through the red tape and donate?
Does anyone know if it will work with Leopard?

MTR 3.0.14j with new Libraries installed works like a champ
    on Leopard 10.5.1.

That being said, I had to perform a Clean install of Leopard,
asmy first attempt doing an Upgrade over Tiger did not Work,
causing me all kinds of headaches.

No, the redtape is to protect the makers of MTR, and to insure
GB gets paid. Too many people NOT donating
( and dare I say, STEALING) has lead to the current state of acquiring MTR.

Won't be long before all our favorite shareware on the mac goes this route....?

    ( looks over at ffmpegx.....)

  12. When you say you installed new libraries, what do you mean and where do you find them?
As my version of MTR is practically the newest version wouldn't I be entitled to the latest version for free anyway?

    ROTFL!!!

um, and by that logic, I suppose you'll next want to trade in your
(insert make/model) car for the newest (insert make/model) car
and walk out scott free, just because you bought the last one?

    See my earlier post?
    If don't need to shrink,
you can try for some discs
(read, Nothing made by Sony or Universal or Lionsgate)
to rip and make copies with just MTR and Toast to Dual Layer discs,
but If you need anything from the above three studios,
you will need DVD2ONEX to "clean up" the rip from MTR.
