Hey! great. Thank you very much. How did you find that?
I'm not very familiar with RTMPdump but here is my attempt at downloading the file. It didn't seem to download anything.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

i think for the better quality you need sign in -
Thanks for the link, I'll have to read that closely. I have both plugins but I've never thought of using Adblock Plus for URL sniffing. I also use Download Helper but it doesn't activate when I play videos on the PBS site. Yours activates when you play the videos?
I've been able to DL 2500k videos without signing in by altering the URL of the 800k m3u8 video URLs I've been able to dig up. Of course the link you sent me isn't quite the same as the URLs of the newer videos they post. -
if you read the post 19

I hadn't read that post thoroughly yet but taking a second look I see now. I have downloaded and installed User Agent Switcher. I'll have to play around with it. Maybe it will help me with some other sites where Download helper doesn't activate. Thanks!

JE SUIS CHARLIE !!! -
All you need to do for PBS is disable Flash and use the web inspector to search for an MP4.

Had the same question and found this slightly older thread. Got it to work with the info herein and thought I'd say thanks (Thanks!) and quickly detail what worked for me. Both AdBlocker Plus and VLC were free too which is always a good price. For the record I'm on Win 7, 64bit and a reasonably new version of Firefox.
Found the stream address using AdBlocker Plus as described earlier in the thread. Manually changed to '2500' to catch the higher res without 'logging in' to the PBS site.
Could not make ffmpeg work on the streams I was after. Kept getting matroska container errors.
Switched to VLC and used their stream capture (Menu Media --> Open Network Stream --> Convert). Used 'dump raw input' option for most. Occasionally had to use 'Display the output' and the pre-defined H264 profile on long streams that were crashing midway. Much slower (real time) than raw dump but worked I suspect because the traffic looked more agreeable to the servers that way. No clue really, I'm a stream rookie.
Hope this info helps someone as dim as me on all this stuff. I'll write a more detailed guide if someone needs it but that's pretty much the whole process until they decide to change something else on their site. Cheers! -
So I tried the method described in post 19 and it did download, but had no audio and it was playing really fast. How do I adjust the settings to correct this? Also, I tried downloading user agent switcher and it didn't show up on the tool bar. So now I have to donate to get it? ugh.

I just downloaded it with Internet Download Manager, you have to wait through the commercial and clickthe download with IDM button.
-
Okay, the user agent is resolved (biezom btw) I'm still trying to figure out the sound issue though has anyone else had to deal with this?
-
-
for what video?
Apparantly getting the user agent hoo-jiggy set up properly did the trick.
And guys, no offence but I am so gratefull to not have to deal with the codes and urls and what not else you nice folks like to dabble in.
As I said in a previous post in another thread, I am not technologically inclined so if you all could keep your explanations of things to me in words of one or two syllables I'd appreciate it! LOL -
I've tried all the methods here and only ended up confused. If anyone could come up with a direct (720p) link for this, I'd be forever grateful:

UpperCanada's link is easier but you can also use this ffmpeg command line:
Code:"c:\program files\ffmpeg\bin\ffmpeg" -i "http://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/videos/wvia-original-documentary-films/50176d87-c9a4-4f9d-bd79-cd2cb3941939/187609/hd-mezzanine-16x9/ab7cea41_knoebels-16x9-hls-2500k.m3u8" -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.ts

Thank you for all of the helpful info. Even an old geezer of 82 years of age was able to follow the different ideas in this thread!. This thread has helped immensely! I have so many nice HD treats offline now.
One question, what are the best ways to probe for higher bitrate streams?
This video is in SD only?:
http://video.pbs.org/video/1295282213/
-> http://video.pbs.org/videoInfo/1295282213/ yields:
http://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/videos/keeping-score/66a03ae2-7da2-4693-a78b-3b25e242355f/...KESC101_SD.mp4
I have tried myriad combinations to try to get HD streams, but I guess there are none? -
Hi Guys,
I'm from the Netherlands, and am trying to download the Walt Disney docu on PBS.
video.pbs.org/video/2365556519/
First problem is the country restriction, but got around that part. But i'm not getting mutch farther.
With the help of a video download site i got the file with this URL:
http://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/videos/american-experience/c0625238-e440-41e4-94d2-4b7cff3...4-baseline.mp4
But it's the lowest resolution. And really would like to get it in high-res!
