  1. Hi all

I'm new to the forum - I have to say I wish I'd found this place weeks ago, it would have saved me loads of hassle!

I'm embarking on a project to back up a number of DVDs and Blu-rays in my collection. My current approach is as follows:

    - Use MakeMKV to rip a high quality MKV of the video file
    - Use Handbrake to encode into a MP4 file

I'm not bothered about other disc features, I just want good quality video with a 5.1 audio track. Not bothered about subtitles either.

I also want the file to be playable on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and via my WDTV Live streamer.

The above approach seems to work fine for HD content but I'm struggling with anything SD. I've read the Handbrake guide to interlaced content etc but I can't seem to get the correct settings to encode the video correctly.

If I can use as an example - I'm trying to back up my Season 1 Dexter set. I've used MediaInfo to analyse the ripped MKV file which gives me the following details:

    Code:

I'm using the following Handbrake settings:

    Anamorphic: Loose (modulus 16)
    Detelecine: Default
    Decomb: Default
    CQ: 18
Variable frame rate (same as source)
    Auto passthru on audio track
    Advanced settings:

    Code:
    rc-lookahead=50:ref=4:bframes=0:cabac=0:8x8dct=0:weightp=0:subq=9:me=esa:merange=32
However the resulting video is showing a lot of distortion, particularly at the top of the video (screenshots attached). I'm using VLC to view the videos as a test so I'm sure it's not a hardware / codec issue. The source MKV is also fine - I have played this using VLC and encounter no issues so I'm confident the source is good quality.

If anyone can give me a few pointers as to how to overcome this issue it would be massively appreciated! I'm not averse to trying a different approach, but most of the guides I've seen elsewhere seem to point to a combination of MakeMKV / Handbrake as the choice to achieve what I'm aiming for.

    Cheers

    Chris

  3. wild guess:
you are encoding interlaced and the vlc doesn't like interlaced H.264 material,.. if that is the case, using a deinterlacing during reencoding should help
posting a mediainfo analysis of the output might help,...

Try skip the makemkv step. Rip to a VIDEO_TS folder with for example dvdfab decrypter and then select the video_ts folder in handbrake.

There's a program similar to HandBrake called XMedia Recode and it has a TON of presets, including one for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

I know this because my mother bought that tablet for herself as a Christmas present in 2011 and I've tried encoding video for her but I find that it has a REALLY hard time with 720p video (at least when the bitrate goes high). I've had better success with SD (Standard Definition) video although I'm still trying to figure out the bitrates limits to achieve good 720p results (without frame dropping). Problem is I only see her about once every 2 weeks and so I don't get to test the tablet very often LOL

I did get some SD samples that played back fine and I made those with HandBrake used a 1:1 pixel ratio (so full screen 720x480 from a DVD became 640x480). The problem is I did that so long ago I can't remember how I did it now LOL

I do know that the video shows up in MediaInfo as BaseLine @ 3.0
