    Hi,

I am currently using Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate. I convert my videos mainly to hardsub the video for PSP playback.

My problem is that the subtitles that I found are encoded in UTF-8 format, with fonts such as ♪

But when I finish converting, I realize that my converter is unable to read the Unicode SRT file and these special fonts became gibberish. Normal alphabets still works fine though.

Is there anyway I can force the converter to encode my subtitles file in Unicode? I asked the Xilisoft staff and they told me it is not possible for me to change the subtitle encoding options.

    Thanks.

If the converter doesn't support utf8 subs you can't do much...

Try other solutions and see if they support utf8 subs, like freemake video converter or xvid4psp.

Don't know if this is any help but Subtitle edit can re-convert the subs you have to any of a number of other formats. It also has the ability to clean up the characters you described

The vast majority of subtitle tools will NOT work with Unicode. It is unfortunate, but that's how it is.

There are a small number of subtitle tools that will work with Unicode, but I don't remember what they are. We've had discussions here about it. You may be able to find references by doing a search here of the forums.

If you are using character sets other than Latin, you will have more problems. I see that you are from Singapore so if you are trying to get something to work with Chinese characters you will have to work a lot harder than if you were using the Latin alphabet such as for English. If I have made a bad assumption and you actually just want to remove things like musical characters from English subtitles, you can just cut and paste into something like Microsoft Word and use the Find option to "Find and replace" special characters like this. For example cut and paste a musical character as what to find and put a blank space as what to replace it with. Or put nothing to replace it with to simply delete it.

jaman98 is very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff so he's probably right. All I know is that subtitle edit inputs and outputs utf8 unicode,Unicode and Unicode BigEndian.

A simple experiment you could try is to convert the subs into ANSI using Notepad++ (free program) takes about 2 seconds. Under the Encoding menu scroll to Convert to ANSI and then save - done! I do this on a regular basis for my Popcorn C200 which doesn't like "Big Endian" and the like.

After posting my comments above I looked at 2 of my folders. Both of them with free programs. First folder titled Subtitle programs. There were 33 separate programs in that folder. Second folder was Notepads. As mentioned just above I did find Notepad++ as well as 17 others. The only thing I use these notepads for is to do special things to make BRsups, DVD subs.or CCs convert to a srt that will work in my Media players. So far.. I haven't been stumped yet... but it's not easy finding the right program to do the job you want.

I'm a srt subtitle freak. Every video that I have that has an available subtitle I convert to srt and when I have a problem I just go thru all of them. Sooner or later I find what I'm looking for. So don't give up.
