  1. Hi all,
I'm a newbie and I'm considering switching to a 16:9 TV set but I have
a couple of questions, so any help would be very much appreciated.
    a) I've noticed that DVD titles made for 16:9 TV-screens come in various
image formats. Some read 1.77:1 others 2.55:1 etc. Does that mean
that even on a widescreen TV there will still be those annoying top and
bottom black bars depending on the above stated image ratio
(2.55:1, etc) of each particular DVD-title? I'm saying this because on
my existing 4:3 TV the width of the black-bars when playing back a
DVD-title made in widescreen formats varies: With some movies,
each black bar takes up appr. 1/8th of the screen area, whereas with
others 1/4th of it! Is this what I should expect even from a high-end
    widescreen TV?
    b) Can EXISTING DVD-titles benefit from a TV set that claims to offer
high-resolution image? That is, will an EXISTING DVD movie be
viewed at a better quality (crisper) on a plasma 42'' TV having a
resolution of 1240X1240 than on a plasma 42'' TV of a corresponding
    resolution of 800X600 or so?

    Thanks in advance,
    manolis

  2. Yes even on a widescreen Tv (aspect ratio 1.77:1) you will have black bars when aspect radio is greater than 1.77:1. The size of black bars will be smaller than on a 4:3 tv.

2.35:1 movies are a real shit and crap to watch (more black bars than video) and the should not exist

Let's cut the pretense and rename this thread to something more appropriate. Something like People Who've Never Seen A Sergio Leone film, or maybe Morons Who Should Be Excluded From Any Position Of Say Regarding An Artistic Matter, would be appropriate.

The film is 2.55:1, and that's it. Get over it. A good director uses a particular aspect ratio for a reason.
