I feel like I've tried everything!

Goal: Encode and burn .avi files to dvd for play on standalone dvd player.

Problem: DVD plays PERFECT from file and DVD on laptop...and does play in standalone but I'm getting a one/two second visual & audio skip every minute or so in the DVD Player. Irritating!

Using: Visualhub to encode & DVD2OneX2 or Toast 7 to burn. (doesn't make any difference in either)

What I've tried in VH advanced settings:
    - Matching frame speed - I opened the .avi in Quicktime to match the Frame speed, 23.98, in advance settings - no difference.
    - Checking "Force QuickTime Decode" - no difference.
    - Checking "Deinterlace" - no difference.

I also already tried converting the .avi and burning all in Toast 7...no blips in the movie but the quality is AWFUL! Visualhub gives a great picture and very minimal loss so I'd like to use it if I can get it to work! Please help. I am going crazy!

    Let's start at the beginning:

    1. Open the .avi in Quicktime. Perform a cmd( apple-) i.
The Movie Info window appears. What does it say are the video and
audio codecs used by the .avi? Post those here please.

    2. Is Perian 1.1.14 installed on your system?

    3. If Quality is AWFUL as you say in Toast, this could be because
Toast is trying to "fit content" to the DVD-5 spec, and it is
"over-encoding" too much. So, to address that, what is the runtime
(length of movie in hours/mins/sec) of the .avi?

Unfortunatley, i'm at work. But, thanks for the response. I will check on the avi codecs in Quicktime when I get done. Also, I do not have Perian on my machine as far as I know. I will install this when I get off. As for the .avi size, it was a small 20 minute clip. So, I don't know that much compression would have taken place to cause the low quality video. I will get back to you soon. Thanks for the reply!

Ok. Perian was not installed on my machine. I have done that. As far as what "codecs" are being used by the .avi...i have the QT info window open...but nothing says codecs and I have no idea what that means. Can you explain? This is what I do see:
Format: DivX6, Unknown MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    FPS 23.98
    Data Rate: 1223.25
    Normal Size: 640 x 272
    Current Size: (Same)
    Does that help?

Should simply adding Perian solve my issue? If so what settings in VisualHub should I use now?

DivX6 is the video codec. MPEG Layer 3 (a.k.a. MP3) is the audio codec. The audio has two channels (stereo). The audio is sampled at 48 kHz. Not sure what the 'Unknown' part is about.

I just attempted ffmpegX since I haven't gotten any further with VisualHub but can't even get it to recognize the .avi file to encode. Can anyone help with VH?

  8. that's rare, the only avi's i havn't been able to convert are some old clips that use the IV50 codec..i had an older application that i would use on troublesome avi's,it would let me re-encode with a different codec which was all that i needed to use mpeg2works to make a dvd compliant file

If your happy with the DVD, so your happy with the converted MPEG.

2 options more (not readed in previous posts):

    Burn:
    - your DVDPlayer does not like your DVD-R
    - you burn your disc at high speed (prefer the slowest one to be compliant with home dvd players)
    - You didn't burn your disc with "Video" option (aka UDF 1.02+ISO track). LiquidCD http://www.maconnect.ch/ does it automatically for you

    encoding:
    - your VOBs (=DVD video format) are wrapped first in MPEG-PS by VH with FFmpeg (and FFmpeg is not the most compatible wrapper for these streams)
demux it, and remux the resulting streams (with the mplex tool, far more compliant in most of case)

And if the concern was eleswhere, other posts certainly talked about it

I've tried the disc in other players. Same results.
I tried burning at 2X instead of Best. Same results.
I can't get FFmpeg to recognize .avi files so I don't know if this works.

    Also tried: Popcorn...poor quality.
Export in Quicktime as DV & burn...poor quality.

Nothing seems to touch the quality of VisualHub.
Really hoping to get VH to encode for DVD without the blips. Anyone please?

Can you upload the .avi video to Rapidshare or Megaupload?
I'll take a look at it, but if it is DIVX 6 and Perian is installed,
you could then try Visual Hub and under the "Advanced" tab
in VH, you select "force Quicktime Decoding".
It should hand off the .avi to Quicktime/Perian, and then
use it to make your DVD. Try that on your end,
And if you get the .avi file uploaded, I'll try it after dinner
    on my end.

A sample clip of what I'm working with is uploaded as "avisample.avi" to Rapidshare. The clip works fine on the Mac and on a burnt disk played on the Mac. But put into any Standalone player it blips right at the end as the cat is climbing the tree....I don't understand. I do have Perian and QT....and I've tried "force QT Decoding" nothing....Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

The sample clip registers as XviD 1.1.2 video, not DivX 6, by way of VideoSpec. Perhaps you had a DivX® QuickTime Component installed that made QuickTime Player think the video was DivX 6?

Exactly what do you see/hear when a clip "blips". A little more descriptive would be helpful. Is this still the one/two second video/audio skip?

That's where the sample clip ends. To distinguish whatever is happening from end-of-file handling, the issue should be somewhere in the middle of a clip. What is there to skip at the end of a clip?

PS. ffmpegX recognized the sample clip fine on my system.

I'll have to see if I can't get ffmpegX to work again. The blip is an area where the screen looks all pixeled and the audio cuts out. Just a few seconds before the clip ends the blip happens. Then it goes back to normal and ends. I could post a longer clip but same thing happens every couple minutes.

    so it's normal :
take a look to your movie (the travelling outside), your video is not make with 24fps but with 21 fps (and 3 frames duplication inside each second).

Take a look the VH mpeg? is it 23,98(24fps) or 29,97(30fps)?
If you encode it as NTSC VIDEO (30fps) with new frames duplications (agin), the "jerk" will be "less visible".

This is a bad way to do, but your video was badly encoded (lose of 3 frames per second, duplication of existing ones)
