  1. Hmm where to ask...my tv is a plasma with 2 usb inputs. When I watch HD 1.5 gig mkv/avi/mp4 files there's no problem but sometimes audio is out of sync after ff or rewinding..and it's always an mp4 file. Is it differences in how they are encoded? Can I run a header fix instead of a re-encoding.

Of course on the computer there's no playback problems. My plasma model is 2010 Samsung PN58C550G1FXZA

Post the mediainfo report from some of the mp4 files that cause sync issues. It could for example be variable framerate.

  3. If you don't have problems with MKVs as a rule, try remuxing a problem MP4 as an MKV with MKVMergeGUI (no re-encoding). If the issue is something like a variable frame rate as Baldrick suggested, remuxing probably won't help, but if the TV just doesn't play nicely with MP4 files it probably will. MKVMerge will open quite a few different file types and remux them as MKV. MKVMergeGUI makes working with MKVs pretty easy... deleting unwanted streams, replacing audio.... that sort of thing.

I have a Samsung Plasma of around the same vintage. I dislike MP4 anyway, and I mostly remux them as MKV before playing them, so I can't really comment on how well my TV plays MP4 files.

  4. Thanks for the help! It does have variable frame rate. I used to read and apply all knowledge from this site almost 10 years ago. Lot's changed since then. Everything is all h264/mkv etc, etc now...

Avoid variable frame rate video if you want to fast forward on your samsung....

  6. Looks like a Handbrake encode. I still don't understand why it adds BT.709 as the transfer characteristics for NTSC or PAL standard definition.

Anyway.... I'd still try remuxing it as an MKV with MKVMergeGUI. You never know, the TV might cope with VFR in an MKV better than in an MP4.
