i'd assume "regain" refers to something lost while watching the playback. there wouldn't be any loss watching a lossless codec playback.

  5. I compressed a movie down to one byte: 135. Can you tell what movie it was? Can you reconstruct a single frame? Can you reconstruct anything? Once information is gone, it is gone.

Then what is the use of up scaling a video file from 720p to 1080p

  7. Upsclaling is just making the picture bigger. It doesn't add details. For example, if you start with a 1080p video then reduce it to 720p, then enlarge the 720p video back to 1080p the result will not have all the fine details of the original 1080p video. The best you can hope for is to enlarge the picture and sharpen it a bit without introducing jaggy edges and oversharpening halos.

The best software may be able to upscale 720p to 1080p slightly better than your media player or TV. But it will take a lot of processing time just for a minor increase in picture quality. And you will add another level of compression artifacts. It's usually just not worth it.

None, (unless it's being used/edited with other 1080p material and you want consistency).
