  2. What are your hardware specs ?

Is this plain editing without any effects / filters ?

Did you try reducing preview quality ?

What type of footage are you editing (specs) ? eg. 4k footage is going to be more resource heavy than SD.

The other options are to re-encode to something easier to edit (e.g. cineform) , or use a proxy workflow

You have to loop it a few times, and it will smooth out. Use the Composite Level Envelope to flip back and forth between multicam shots.

The final render will be perfect.

    specs
    os: windows 7
    cpu: intel core i5
    ram: 4gb
    hdd: 581gb

plain editing with blu-ray quality movie scenes. thing is, i've edited blu-ray quality before and haven't had a problemt. tried reducing preview quality, didn't really help.

how exactly do you go about doing these things, and which would be more optimal

If you're doing all fast cuts, what does it matter if it stutters in the preview window? You KNOW exactly where the cuts are.

Tell us more about your project.

because i'd like to see how the project will turn out. isn't that what a preview window is for? and they're not all fast cuts, just one section (20~ seconds).

it's a montage, with clips from the movie placed over some music.

4gb ram is on the low side for a 64bit version of win7. check how much ram is free while using vegas with the task manager. takes about 2gb just to boot windows and if you have a shared memory video chip you might be using hard disk swapping for video preview.

check the places marked with the red arrows during previewing with vegas. if they go to 4gb or 100% you need to increase the ram in the computer.

then you could try increasing the amount of ram reserved for video preview. vegas/options/preferences/video/dynamic ram preview max. default is like 200mb. try 1gb.

    doesn't seem to work

edit: ok, so i raised it to the max (2932 mb) and it's not perfect, but i think it's the best i'm gonna get.

A fast video card might do you some good as a bunch of effects can use gpu acceleration. Nvidia 670 or 660ti are decent.
