    Hi...

    I was trying to open an mp4 file from my phone and avidemux (2.6.9) says that cannot find a demuxer for that mp4 file.

    mediainfo says about that mp4 file:

    OMG! Another variable frame rate disaster. Good luck with that. Other members here are very fond of VFR, so they can help with that.

    I guess you know that mp4 is a container, not a codec. The codec used here is AVC-1. Try ffdshow.

    That is how the file was saved by the phone. When I go through avidemux, I always choose Average Bitrate of 3000 Kb/s.

    So I should try to install (reinstall) ffdshow right?

    I don't know how to compile that version! I've seen the instructions and I don't even know what is bootStrap.bash file!

    I read the log you've post which said the plugins don't exist for Avidemux that's why it can't open any files (mp4, etc.) !!

    I've read these instructions too on this page http://avidemux.org/admWiki/doku.php?id=build:install_2.6.
    Open a Terminal and do this : first you must check if all requirements are OK. Then you can compile your avidemux build as .deb with your needs (example : bash bootStrap.bash --deb --enable-qt5). BootStrap.bash is included with the Avidemux source, just extract the files etc..

    After running this command

    Code:
    bash bootStrap.bash --deb --enable-qt5
    is avidemux ready to use or do I need to do anything else?

    I assume I have QT5 because I have something called Qt RCreator installed and in the About Qt Creator menu it says:

    Qt Creator 2.8.1, based on Qt 5.1.1.

    Edited;

    Ok, I have done the bash command and installed all those deb files that were created. But when I run avidemux3-qt5 and open a video, the avidemux video window looks like fronzen and if I drag the main avidemux window it gets worst.
    In the console it also says :

    QWidget:aintEngine: Should no longer be called
    QWidget:aintEngine: Should no longer be called
    QWidget:aintEngine: Should no longer be called
    QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
    QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted

    The same here with 2.6.9. 2.6.10 is no solution at the moment (as you already know). Revert back to 2.6.8 (stable Jessie in deb-multimedia.org), that solved the problem for me.

  9. Hey, did you get to solve this? I'm having the exact same problem. Avidemux opens but the video part is frozen. I'm using Debian.

    Well, there aren't many linux users here, never mind debian. I use mint myself, which comes with a lot of codecs. Debian doesn't AFAIK.

    Have you tried the debian forums? They have a lot of expertise, but they don't do a lot of noob hand holding. Which is why it's considered a distro for advanced users. Unfortunately I suspect you may be using the wrong distro.

    I know there are not a lo of Linux users.

    And yes Debian is not very easy to work with but I like it to fight back although sometimes I get frustrated. But most of the times I manage to get wha tI need! Sometimes I don't!

  13. hey, today I did a package update and now avidemux seems to be working correctly, or at least I'm not getting the same behavior as before. I hope I don't get into another problem.

    Are you going to say what package was that?

    He didn't say which release he was using, and in any case I'm not 100% sure you even have that package.

    I reinstalled mint 17 a couple of days ago. Upgrading to 17.1 (which is still based on ubuntu 14.04) seriously hurt my video performance. There's something weird going on with the i915 driver. This isn't unheard of with intel video in linux, contrary to what many linuxers think.

    So of course I installed avidemux again and found I couldn't convert to many formats. I forgot to install avidemux-plugins. you'd think it'd be automatically installed but it wasn't.

    This is mint, which is only debian once removed. But it'd be worth looking at.

    But I'm still wondering, frankly, why you just don't install ubuntu or mint. Debian is NOT designed for linux noobs. You'd be saving yourself a ton of grief.

    If you won't do that at least read this:

  16. I'm sorry, what I meant was that I did an usual "apt-get update; apt-get upgrade" and avidemux was one of the packages being upgraded. After that the problem was solved.
