  1. I have often created CUE files for lengthy live recordings that allow me to access individual tracks in the single files. However, I am looking for the equivalent playlist file format, that is, a separate file that will allow me to play individual songs from within large files. M3U and PLS are two common playlist formats, but they both seem to be able to play multiple individual files and not tracks from within single files.

Can anyone help? This has been driving me nuts!

    Thanks!

ASX, SMIL, and QTL should all be able to do that. Hard part (in the first 2) is embedding the start/begin & stop/end markers.

Thanks for the quick response, Scott. I should have mentioned that the large files are FLAC audio-only files. Will these three options do the job? QTL seems to be a video control format.....

With ASX, the player is assumed to be a ACM/VCM/VfW- or a Directshow-aware app. So, if you wanted FLAC playback, get a FLAC decoder that works with one of those APIs. Here's one from Xiph: http://xiph.org/dshow/ and here's one from Doom9: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=130498. The Xiph site now hosts a whole bunch of the core info on FLAC, so that's probably the 1st stop choice.
