I posted a Document and a video here that shows how to use Aegisub to create an .ssa format subtitle document and then use it with Virtualdub and it's subtitle plugin to modify subtitles to display where and how you want. Basically Virtualdub subtitle plugin doesn't recognize some tags like \pos for position but does recognize others such as \an1, \an2, etc for positioning different locations on the screen and you can fine adjust with MarginL, marginR, and MarginV in the ssa document. The document shows 2 different ssa files and the results and explainations and the video (49 MB) shows actually creating hard coded subtitle file with virtualdub and ssa file.

I added the video above with subtitles and the actual .SSA subtitle document at:

http://files.videohelp.com/u/214352/videohelp%20subtitled.avi
There is also an excellent document on .SSA format and what each tag is/set as at:
http://moodub.free.fr/video/ass-specs.doc
And .ASS tags at:
http://docs.aegisub.org/manual/ASS_Tags (thats ASS<Underscore>Tags)
I tried to cover most of whats left out in some helps. Hope they help.
Thanks

Why not use the TextSub filter from the VSFilter/DirectVobSub package, instead? I don't recall ever having a problem with positioning and .ass subtitles using it with VirtualDub.
Could that be running into limitations of the SSA format, though? I've never really worked with .ssa subs, just .ass.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
