My question is, I convert just the audio and leave the video are "copy source". The resultant file doesnot mention variable bitrate, so, did I lose the variable mode to constant mode? Is there any way to retain variable bitrate mode? If the question appears noobish, please don't be sarcastic....

    Thanks in advance

For the AC3 audio? No, but you might get better sounding audio by making it 448 Kbps if that's an option.

For the video part? That's why I answered about the audio - because both videos already show as VBR.

  5. No, you didn't. Just because MediaInfo does not report it it doesn't mean your video is CBR. After all, you just copied video part.

Also, x264 does not realy support CBR mode, only ABR and VBR.
