Trouble converting from VOB with MPEG Streamclip

I have a VOB which I've spliced and would like to convert to AVI for YouTube. However, when I use MPEG Streamclip to convert to AVI, the resulting file always ha some "tracking" issues on the right extremity of the file. There are a series of short black dashes which run down the length of the right hand side. At first I thought it was related to deinterlance/interlace selection, but that is not the case. Then I suspected it was due to cropping on the right hand side, but when I don't crop away the black vertical bar on the right hand side from the original VOB, the resulting file looks even *worse* because the little dashes now appear to be moving--like tracking difficulty on an old VHS...

How do I encode so that the black dashes are not present in my output file?

what if you go first to DV Stream from MpegStreamclip,
(forgetting about avi)
then use the DV Stream in VisualHub to go straight to .flv?

Would that count as two encodes, or does DV Stream not degrade the quality? I found that the black dashes only appear when the clip is played in QT, not VLC or mplayer. Perhaps I should just upload to YouTube and see if the dashes appear.

Also, is there any way to encode subtitles in MPEG Streamclip? The quality of the output file is superior when using Streamclip compared to either Handbrake or D-Vision for this VOB, but I haven't been able to encode the subtitles.

No, no muxing of the subtitles to the video in MpegStreamclip
can occur, it doesn't support subs.

DV Stream will flatten the video, getting rid of any codec issues
in the avi, but transcoding to ANYTHING will always be a bump in quality.


You could try this, if you have the available HD space:
since it plays fine in VLC, and VLC will display the subs,
you could "hijack" the video with iShowU and record it
as it plays in real time in VLC to a Quicktime movie,
or a DV Stream file. Then, you have the subs embedded,
the footge should be great, and you're ready to upload.
