Hi everyone, I received a few files with formats .mpeg and .mp4 and I should encode them to h264. However they are not recognized by k-lite and ffmpeg.

With hex edtior I found that they are different from most of the files with that extension, the first line is MPG4. Anyone has an Idea how can I find out which codec to use?

    Regards,
    Martin

  2. 1. Download and install MediaInfo
    2. Be sure to not accept any other software it offers to install
    3. Use it to open your file

If you can use a hex editor. This should be easy enough.

After installing the program I get the following info with MediaInfo:
    General
    Complete name : ***
    Format : MPEG-PS
    File size : 12.3 MiB

    Audio
    ID : 199 (0xC7)
    Format : MPEG Audio
    Compression mode : Lossy

Do you have a recommendation for a codec or a converter for this format?

That "MPG4" you've found could be the FourCC. I've looked it up. And here's what I've found... <Hit me>

I have tried VLC with no luck, I also tried the smplayer but it couldn't play it also.

Regarding the fourCC idea, I'm still looking for that decoder on the internet, If I have any luck. I'll write you.

Do you think the files could be encrypted and that is the reason the mediainfo couldn't find the video stream? Because I don't have much info for them, and I was asked to try and open them.
Any idea how to check if they are encrypted?

Thanks a lot for the help,
    Martin

If it's just audio shouldn't mediainfo post the length?

I'd be doing some serious virus scanning about now.

I don't think they have viruses.Anyway I work in a Virtual Machine with them mostly because all the programs I install, so they can't do much damage.

I think they just might be encrypted, but thanks for the concern.
