  1. Hi I'm a newbie in video converting.

I used RipBot to convert anime from .avi to .mkv and I found some of the converted videos are out of sync with the audio.
The problem is the video after the conversion. The original video length is 22:07 but the converted video length is 22:05.
I tried with other anime and it seems that RipBot keep modifying the lengths of videos and fix them at 22:05.
How can I solve the problem?

Post the details from the avi. Use MediaInfo, view->text and copy and paste.

Or try another all-in-one converter like handbrake or xmedia recode.

Or try remux the avi to mkv, with mkvtoolnix / mkvmergegui open the avi and make a new mkv. No video and audio reconversion. But if you are doing any resizing, shrinking, embedding subtitles this wont work.

So there's no way you can 'prevent' BitRip from changing the video length?
p/s: Yea, I'm trying to use RipBot to convert the avi into smaller-size mkv. So far I've converted 4 episodes of 300+MB avi into 100+MB mkv

I noticed the frame rate is non-standard:
    Frame rate : 23.934 fps

What is the frame rate of the converted (out of synch) file?

The frame rate is different from the original video (23.930). So does it mean that I can solve my problem if the frame rate is the same? How do I solve my problem?

Try using Avidemux 2.6 to convert the file. http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/

    Download and install build 7740.

  7. To convert which file? The original one? I'm confused of how to use it to change the frame rate. Please provide some guideline. Thank you so much

    leave the frame rate as is and try to re-convert the original. It's possible the FR is a red herring;
    there may be other issues.

In general, if the FR is non-standard and you want to watch it on the PC, it's fine.
However, if you want to play it on an external media player/standalone it is better to
have it at the proper 23.976/29.97.

Sometimes some corruption in the source, perhaps only a few frames, can cause a
    a synch problem during conversion.

  9. What should I set in the conversion (using avidemux) so that I won't lose much quality?
    Sorry for the trouble..

Set ouput format to MKV. Set video to mpeg4 AVC. The default setting is pretty good, CRF 20.
Try with settings 18 to 20. The lower the number, the bigger file and better quality.

I must ask... why are you converting avi to mkv? You do not gain much.
    MKV: Merely Krappy Video.

Subbers, a request from an avid viewer: Either don't use mkv, or supply avi or mp4 as an alternative.
