    Hello forum,

Was wondering whats the best miniDV tape choice for my Panasonic NV DS25 camcorder. MiniDV tapes of any brand will do or should I stick to Panasonic tapes?

    Many thanks!!

I've been happy with Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ for my Sony and Canon camcorders for general use. This is a reasonably priced (in bulk) pro grade tape.

    Thanks for the reply.

I heard about the Panasonic miniDV AY-DVM60EJ3. How good/bad is this as compared to Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ that you mentioned. I couldn't make out the difference yet.

    Thanks again

Pro tapes are designed for pro workflows which means tougher backings and magnetic surface to survive fast wind pro decks and more repeated tape use. Also pro tapes are expected to be played years later in these same demanding decks.

Consumer tapes can be compromised for lower demand slow shuttle camcorders (e.g. more stretchy backings) and can be offered at lower price.

The AY-DVM63PQ is Panasonic's general use pro tape. For serious mastering duty they have the AY-DVM63MQ at about double the price. The main extra demand placed on mastering tape by pro decks is extensive stop/step frame while finding edit points. These tapes have tougher magnetic surfaces.
