Splitting 2 channel AC3 Audio

I extracted the .ac3 file from a MKV (Used mkvtoolnix). The audio is "AC3 @ 192 Kbps 2 channels". I only saw the 1 audio file when I extracted it.

Now I want to split it and convert it to MP3 (or aac?). How do I do that without losing too much? Is the best way to do it is to convert it to MP3, then split it up? or Should I convert it to FLAC, then MP3 ? Not sure if converting to flac will do any good?

Also, which programs to use? if I convert to MP3 and split is Audacity good for this?

edit: When I say split, the audio is a 1 hr 22 min long audio file. I just want 3 minutes of it taken out and put into a MP3 file or whatever

well, its for playing the song on my ipod/phone? For my computer/home entertainment, I can keep the ac3 file. or am I missing something?

Convert it to mp3. Use something like eac3to or format factory.

Edit - you can keep the original ac3 file. Just copy the new mp3 file with itunes to your iphone.

edit: hmm, maybe you think split, as in split out the channels and take that? yeah, I didn't mean that, sorry. I just want a song out of it that I cannot find anywhere else.

Do it the other way round.
First convert the ac3 file to mp3 with WinFF from here ---> http://winff.org/html_new/
Then cut out the one song with mp3DirectCut from here ---> http://mpesch3.de1.cc/mp3dc.html
