I have an avi file 4:3 (the picture inside is 16:9 with black areas at the top, bottom and sides)
I need to convert this file to 16:9. I tried to do it but the quality I get is not good.
    Thanks

If you gave some useful details you might get useful answers. Something like :

    1. What sort of avi file ? AVI is a container. What codecs are being used ? what is the resolution ?

    2. What tools are you using at the moment ?

    3. What output do you require ? AVI, DVD ?

Based on what little information you have given, all I can offer in return is crop the black off and re-encode with a suitable codec at a good bitrate and you will get what you want.

Give me more details to work with, and I can give you a more detailed process.

You cannot turn a pigs ear into a silk purse.

It's going to look stretched whatever you do.

Not if it is done properly. There is no reason for stretched output other than poor processes and tools, or lack of knowledge.
