new laptop, do i have to re download all my apps to sync it to this comp? i mean when i connect the only option says erase and sync
which would mean i have to find all the cds which i no longer have, re download all apps/books etc and also get all the video back on my comp then back on ipod/iphone... such a hassle

Programs like SharePod can supposedly put iPod stuff back to your computer:

You still need to have iTunes installed though. How you get them out of iTunes and save them "for real" is up for debate.

If you install the BIG package of CopyTrans....you will be able to backup everything from your iPod back into iTunes. I just did it. I had videos that I loaded to my iPod (Touch 4G) with CopyTrans......opened up the pay/trial version of CopyTrans Suite and now my iTunes contains the videos.
