can anyone please tell me approxiatly what duration of AVCHD video will fit on a standard 4.7gb single layer dvd-r disc?

It entirely depends on your file's bitrate. AVCHD is typically, but not necessarily, between12-50mbps. -

Your question is impossible to answer it is possible to use very low bit rates and put a lot of poor quality video on a DVD in AVCHD format, but to give you a rough guideline, if you use 448 Kbps AC3 audio, you could put an hour of video on the DVD at a bit rate of 9200 Kbps and you should have enough space left over for the miscellaneous files that AVCHD format discs require. 9200 Kbps is significantly lower than any commercial BluRay disc would use as bit rates there would typically be anywhere from 20000 Kbps to maybe 50000 Kbps depending on whether single layer or dual layer BD media is being used and the length of the video.
