Hi everyone I really am not that familiar with a bunch of this computer stuff. What I am trying to do is connect my laptop computer to an external monitor.

Ok so my setup is this:
I have a Dell Latitude D820. It has vga output only.

My monitor has svideo, component, and hd component.

There are cables that connect vga to svideo but I found they do not work for most newer computers. Also there are vga to dvi converters and then dvi to hd cables I could use, but this would be upwards 200 dolla. I figured a new video card with some new ports would be the better option.

What I am looking for is something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127301 but specifically my computer.

Can you help me find a video card that will be an improvement from the one already on my computer, but also has each of these three ports(dvi, svideo, and hdmi,,,I heard you could get cards that have a dvi port only for like 50 bucks!)??

    Thanks a lot

  2. You have a laptop so you can't change your videocard, you have to buy a VGA to S-Video converter:

The S-Video quality from a converter will be poor.

You either need to change your laptop to one with analog component out or change your TV for one with VGA in.

VGA is RGB+HV sync. S Video is Y/C NTSC.

According to http://www.notebookforums.com/thread187620.html you could also use a DPort Port Replicator, or the Dell D/Dock Expansion Docking Station for TV-out. Not inexpensive though.

About 640x480 but less sharp for text. OK for video playback.

Ok well thanks a lot I think il go with the converter . This resolution would be fine for my application.

But one more thing,, does the converter take care of the VGA is RGB+HV sync. S Video is Y/C NTSC problem??

Yes, it is a scan converter with Y/C out.
