  1. Since atm. only mkvtoolnix 6.2.0 is available for mac (the one who normally compiles MKVtoolnix seems to have vanished), I was wondering if someone out there has some experience in compiling mkvtoolnix.

The goal would be to have an .app version of the current mkvtoolnix.

All in all current mkvtoolnix works fine for me, but since one of the next mkvtoolnix releases should incorporate HEVC support, it would be nice to have a Mac OS 10.6+ version by then.

No need to compile, just download the app and run it.

  3. @techiejustin: Then tell me where to get a current (6.5.0) version for Mac OS X 10.6.8 please.
The whole point of this thread is that I only know of 6.2.0 builds which are compiled for Mac.
-> If there is a source for pre-compiled up-to-date MkvToolnix builds which run on Mac OS X 10.6.8 please share!

  4. Somewhere knows why the Mac version still is 6.2?

    SomeWHERE??? Where???

Anyway, from the author's own website:
I don't own a Mac nor do I have access to one. Therefore I do not support the binary packages available below as they were all contributed by third parties.

  6. Yes, sadly Mac is still 6.2.

  7. Sorry for the "somewhere", I meant "someone".

Unfortunately, this site http://jonthn.free.fr/MKVtoolnix/ is no longer updated and the author doesn't answer communications. Someone knows what happens? Is there some information about why this is so?

  8. Nope, afaik even Mosu (the mkvtoolnix author) doesn't know why Johnathan stopped building mkvtoolnix.
Since Mosu never build mkvtoolnix on Mac OS X (probably doesn't even have a Mac), he can't really help building mkvtoolnix on Mac OS X either.

Sadly there doesn't seem to be any Mac OS X user which:
    a. has enough knowledge
    and
    b. motivation
to create a portable version (.app) of mkvtoolnix, from the looks of it most 'interested' users use one of the mac package managers (Fink, homebrw, macports,...) which afaik. only build dynamically linked versions and no .app bundles. + I'm not sure which version is available through the different package managers.

-> if you stumble over an alternative source (or a build script that works) for mkvtoolnix please share.

Just checked a few package manager sites:

    Fink (finkproject.org) only has a 5.0.1-1 package (http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/browse.php?summary=mkvtoolnix)
    MacPorts (macports.org) offers a 6.3.0 package (http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=name&substr=mkvtoolnix), but is missing a maintainer.
Homebrew (brew.sh) couldn't find if they have a working mkvtoolnix package and if they have what version it has
Radix (http://rudix.org/) doesn't seem to have a mkvtoolnix package (http://rudix.org/packages.html)
pkgsrc (pkgsrc.org) only has a 5.0.1-1 package (http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/README-all.html); Joyent (http://pkgsrc.joyent.com/installing.html#installing-on-os-x) doesn't seem to have a newer mkvtoolnix package either (from what I could find via google)

-> seems like package managers are a dead end too, so only way to get an up-to-date mkvtoolnix version would probably to figure out how to build it manually

This is EXACTLY why I don't use my iMac for any kind of video or audio work.

  10. *gig* Problem seem to be that the number of motivated geeks in the Mac community seems to be rather small, or the simply do not like to share there knowledge.

  11. got infos from some Hybrid users, that homebrew now supports mkvtoolnix 6.8.0 (sadly no .app file)

  12. got an update from Jonathan: http://jonthn.free.fr/MKVtoolnix/ has a new mkvtoolnix build for Mac OS X!

  13. New build requires Mac OS 10.7, seems like the 10.6 times are over.

Unless your Mac is so old that Mavericks can't run on it, you really should upgrade. This is the best Mac OS upgrade I've ever seen.

  15. a. tried Maverick on my old mac and it is way slower than Snow Leopard
    b. developing Hybrid I would like 10.6+ compatible tools&co so compiling on Snow Leopard is the most functional way to archive this

Is it still technically possible to compile mkvtoolnix under Snow Leopard?

(yes, I can install Mavericks on my Mac, but I'm preferring to stick with Snow Leopard for the time being... I have some older apps that require it (Rosetta), and just prefer it in general to the newer OS X versions, at the moment.)
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

  17. afaik there is no theoretical problem, but last time I tried I failed due to some problem compiling one of the dependencies.

Is it easy to work with XCode? I haven't really tried to use it since Panther, and they make you jump through some hoops to get it, these days...

Yeah, the always-fun dependencies. Though I say that coming from many, many compile runs on my Linux setup.

  19. No clue, I normally try to use gcc (which comes with the Xcode command line additions).
